Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Hiring a Male Nanny for Baby Sussex?

Choosing the person who will help raise your children is no small decision. But when you’re a member of the British royal family? That choice is even more important. The whole world is watching and waiting for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to decide on a nanny for their new baby, who might be born in just a few weeks.

Prince William and Kate Middleton famously chose Maria Borrallo, a so-called “supernanny” graduate from the renowned Norland College, where all the best nannies are taught. But the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may choose to go in another direction for their own family. Never content to just stick with the status quo, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle believe in breaking traditions. Even when it comes to nannies.

Who will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle choose to be their nanny?

When Baby Sussex is first born, Meghan Markle’s mother Doria Ragland will be moving in to help with caring for the newborn. But that’s likely not a long-term solution. With so many royal responsibilities – including heading up their own new royal household – Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will need assistance caring for Baby Sussex as he or she grows.

No one has officially accepted the position – yet. But rumor has it the couple is considering the very American tradition of hiring a male nanny (also called a “manny”) instead of choosing a woman to raise their child. Some Hollywood A-listers who follow this manny trend include Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Biel, Emily Blunt, and Britney Spears.

Why do Prince Harry and Meghan Markle want a male nanny?

One royal insider explained the royal couple’s decision to potentially hire a male nanny this way: “Hiring a ‘manny’ is far more common in the U.S.—a nation that Meghan is more in tune with—than in the U.K. She’s keen to introduce the royal family to what she considers a more enlightened, modern American approach.”

It’s not like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will only consider having a man as their nanny. But it sounds like they’re more than willing to evaluate candidates of either gender, which is a much more modern approach to the matter.

What other qualifications will the royal nanny need?

Man or woman, there’s no question that Baby Sussex’s nanny will have a few very important characteristics. Apparently, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are also looking for someone who is bilingual. The source said: “A bilingual nanny is an avenue they both wish to explore. Meghan speaks good Spanish and has been honing her French and will be keen that her offspring retain an ear for languages.”

This is a sentiment that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge share, too. Apparently, Prince George and Princess Charlotte are already working on their Spanish with Nanny Borrallo.

And it goes without saying that the nanny would need impeccable references and a huge amount of discretion and trustworthiness. It’s not easy working for the royal family – just ask all the royal staffers who Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have gone through so far.
