Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Becoming ‘Too Popular for Their Own Good,’ Like Princess Diana?
Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle risking becoming “too popular”? While Harry has lived his entire life in the spotlight and Markle had her fair share of attention as an actress before marrying into the Royal Family, their popularity only continues to grow.
Are Prince Harry and Markle becoming as popular as Princess Diana?
Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, was incredibly popular and accused of “stealing the limelight” from the monarchy, according to royal journalist Daniela Elser. Are Harry and Markle heading down that same path?
Elser claims that this level of fame will “upset the royal pecking order” as she shared: “While having glittering charismatic younger members is essential to maintaining public interest in the monarchy, that should never come at the expense of detracting from the person who actually gets to wear the crown.”
Elser further noted: “Whether Diana was just being wilfully obstinate in the face of her husband’s imperious family or simply naive, the causes and issues she devoted herself to in the ’90s transformed her into a global powerbroker who, perhaps unwittingly, stole the limelight and made herself a target.”
She added: “And this was a cardinal sin in the eyes of the royal family — and one her son and daughter-in-law are dangerously close to repeating.”
Why their rising popularity could be an issue
It’s hard to slow their popularity, of course, but, according to Patrick Jephson, author of The Meghan Factor, there is some worry about reaching the level of fame that Diana had.
Jephson explained in the book: “As Diana discovered to her cost, if you acquire for yourself, however justifiably, a profile, a purpose, and a vocal, passionate public devotion independent of the royal mainstream, then you will risk being perceived and presented as a threat to the Crown itself. This will mobilize the full forces of the establishment against you.”
Prince Harry and Markle named ‘Most Influential People On The Internet’
The couple landed on Time’s 25 Most Influential People On The Internet list due to their immense Instagram following. Time notes: “Each month, in an effort to highlight advocates and organizations focusing on issues such as climate change and mental health awareness, the account rotates the users it follows — a savvy strategy that has driven headlines.”
Their “forward-thinking, cause-oriented approach to social media,” the site added, “fits neatly with other ways they are establishing their identity beyond the crown.”
Why royal life is harder for Markle than it was for Princess Diana
While Markle has some experience being in the spotlight and has adapted well to the attention since dating and marrying Prince Harry, some believe she has a harder time with the fame than Diana.
ITV royal editor Tim Ewart noted during Yahoo’s The Royal Box podcast, that Markle is under more scrutiny, explaining: “When it was Diana, there were photographers, there were camera men, people weren’t using smart phones.”
“Now every single person that a member of the Royal Family meets has a smart phone up,” he explained, adding, “Every single word that is said, doesn’t matter where the TV cameras are, doesn’t matter where the snappers, the photographers, they can be anywhere.”
