Are Prince William and Kate Middleton Truly Richer Than Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?
Word on the grapevine is that Prince William and Kate Middleton are richer than Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Considering that Prince William and Middleton have been working royals longer, that wouldn’t be surprising. But, it doesn’t take into consideration that Markle walked into the royal family with her own nest egg.
In today’s article, we’re going to tear into the royal finances and put a rest to this debate! Who do you think is bankrolling the most, the Cambridge team or the Sussex squad?
How does the royal family get paid?
So, that term “working royal” refers to any member of the British royal family who works directly for the Queen. For comparison’s sake, all of Queen Elizabeth II’s children and their spouses are working royals. Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, Prince Andrew’s daughters, are not. Generally speaking, those only a step away from the Queen rock this title while those further down the food chain have to work outside of the palace.
While that sounds awful, it isn’t. Working royals don’t get cut a real paycheck. As an employee of the monarchy, your payment is that you’re financially squared away for your needs and wants. In the case of these two families, the taxpayer dollars and the Duchy of Cornwall handle their expenses.
What’s the Duchy of Cornwall? It’s a private estate, currently belonging to Prince Charles, that consists of commercial and residential properties, valuable land, various financial assets, and a prison.
Who spends more between the Sussexes or the Cambridges?
Considering the finances are squared away out the door, it would be pretty easy for either family to overspend. Prince Harry and Markle just welcomed their first baby into the world: Archie. Pre-natal care, postnatal care, and the general cost of caring for a newborn are staggering.
According to Parenting, your average middle-income family will spend upwards of $12,000 on child-related care in the first year alone. But that’s the average American family! There’s no doubt that a British royal family would spend way more! On the other hand, Prince William and Middleton have several children. A responsibility that doesn’t come cheap.
Taking a look at finances in-depth, it looks like the Sussexes, Markle in particular, spent quite a bit of money last year. Rumors have it that her wedding dress was $135,000 and she’s dropped over $500,000 on her unforgettable attire alone. Let’s not forget her $379,000 baby shower and the $3.8 million it took to renovate Frogmore Cottage.
While that may seem like a lot, apparently it’s just pocket change compared to the Cambridges spending habits. This is evident by the extra lavish lifestyle the Cambridge family has, including maids, trainers, cooks, assistants, and stylists. Ultimately the Cambridge entourage is rolling deep compared to the Sussex crew.
Net worth comparison: Kate Middleton vs. Meghan Markle
According to Good Housekeeping, Markle’s net worth is around $5 million. As a famous ex-Hollywood superstar, Markle was pulling in the dough before she got whisked off her feet by her Prince in shining armor. The Duchess of Sussex reportedly earned $50,000 every time she brought Rachel Zane to life on Suits. With over 100 episodes to her name, she’s made over $5 million from the USA legal drama alone!
So, what about Middleton? Unlike Markle, Middleton didn’t have a big lavish lifestyle before she got hitched to her Prince charming. Even so, she’s managed to amass her own wealth — a wealth that rivals her sister in arms. The Duchess of Cambridge is worth a rather impressive $10 million, double that of Markle’s.
Who’s richer? The Cambridges or the Sussexes?
We already know that Middleton is worth more than Markle, but what about their husbands? If their nest eggs are the same, the win automatically goes to the Cambridges. But, if Prince Harry has managed to build an estate better and bigger than his older brother, the Sussexes win!
It’s believed that the brothers have similar net worths, but Prince Harry could very well be worth more thanks to a nifty inheritance from The Queen Mother. Why wasn’t it split evenly? As Prince William is destined to become King, he wouldn’t need to extra cash, so the inheritance was divided unevenly.
Despite those beliefs, other things hint to the Cambridges ruling the roost. Evident by their hefty spending on their personal entourage. Even if the numbers say that Prince Harry and Markle are on top, the spending habits say otherwise.
