Are Princess Beatrice and Her Fiance Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi Related?

Princess Beatrice, the oldest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, recently got engaged to property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and now that another royal wedding is on the horizon, fans have plenty of questions about the couple. One of the those questions is if the princess and her fiancé are related.

While the thought of marrying someone you share the same bloodlines with makes many people cringe, it’s not uncommon for the royal family to do so. In fact, Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, are related. Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh are second cousins once removed through King Christian IX of Denmark and also third cousins via Queen Victoria.

Moreover, Beatrice’s sister, Princess Eugenie, and her hubby Jack Brooksbank are third cousins once removed as they share a common ancestor in Thomas William Coke, the 2nd Earl of Leicester.

So what about Beatrice and Mozzi? Here’s the answer to that, plus the names of a few famous royal couples you probably didn’t know were related.

Are the princess and Mozzi related to one another?

There have been no reports that the princess and Mozzi are related, however, they have known each other most of their lives. Beatrice’s parents have been very good friends with Mozzi’s family for decades.

Mozzi’s father is a British-Italian former Olympic skier and his great-grandfather is a count who received the title in 1913. The Express noted the family’s ancestral seat is the Villa Mapelli Mozzi in the Bergamo region of Italy. So while Beatrice’s fiancé is technically a count, his regal title is not recognized in the United Kingdom.

Mozzi’s mother is Nicola Williams-Ellis. She was the wife of British politician Christopher Shale, who died of a heart attack in 2011. Mozzi’s mom married sculptor David Williams-Ellis in 2017.

The princess and Mozzi will tie the knot in 2020 and even though there has been some speculation that the ceremony could take place in Italy, Beatrice’s mother recently confirmed the location saying, “It can only be Britain.”

In addition to her sister and grandparents, a few other members of Beatrice’s family are related to their spouses.

Her uncle, Prince Charles, was related to his late first wife, Princess Diana. The Prince and Princess of Wales were distant cousins and descendants of Henry VII.

Prince William and Kate Middleton also share a couple of the same ancestors as they are both related to Sir William Blakiston, a Baronet as well as Sir Thomas Leighton. The latter was an English soldier and politician, who is the duchess’ 11th generation great-grandad and Prince William’s 12th.

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, are also reportedly distant relatives. Prior to their royal wedding in May 2018, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex discovered that they are related through an ancestor of Harry’s great-grandmother. That ancestor was the High Sheriff of County Durham Ralph Bowes, who is an ancestor of Markle’s too from 15 generations ago.
