Are Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank Cousins?

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank tied the knot one year ago but some royal fans have questioned if they are related and if so, how.

While that question may sound a bit odd to some it’s fair when discussing members of the royal family since many of them have some relation to the person they married. For instance, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are related as they are second cousins once removed through King Christian IX of Denmark and also third cousins via Queen Victoria. Moreover, Eugenie’s uncle, Prince Charles wed Princess Diana who was his distant cousin. So are Princess Eugenie and her husband related?

Here’s the answer to that, plus what Eugenie changed after her wedding that her sister, Princess Beatrice, might change as well.

Princess Eugenie made this change

Brooksbank did not receive a royal title when he and the princess said “I do” on Oct. 12, 2018, and Eugenie was given the option to change her name and take his.

As People reported, a few months after her wedding Eugenie began using her hubby’s last name. She was previously known as ‘Princess Eugenie of York” but changed that and is now referred to as “Princess Eugenie, Mrs. Jack Brooksbank.”

Therefore, there’s a possibility that Eugenie’s sibling, who is set to marry Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in 2020, could decide to take her spouse’s last name as well and become “Princess Beatrice, Mrs. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.”

Now to answer the question about if Eugenie and Brooksbank share the same bloodlines, the answer is yes.

According to Business Insider, which used data from the site Peerage.com to find the link between the bride and groom, their common ancestor is 19th-century aristocrat Thomas William Coke, the 2nd Earl of Leicester, making them third cousins once removed.

The Earl is Eugenie’s great-great-great-great-grandfather on Sarah Ferguson’s side. He is also reportedly Brooksbank’s great-great-grandfather from his second marriage to Georgina Caroline Cavendish.

Eugenie and Brooksbank join the list of other royal couples who are also related.

In addition to her grandparents and uncle, Eugenie’s cousin, Prince William is related to his wife, Kate Middleton. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are reportedly distant cousins via a couple of common ancestors. One is Sir William Blakiston, who was a Baronet. The Sun noted that another relation they have is via Sir Thomas Leighton. The latter was an English soldier and politician, who is the duchess’ 11th generation great-grandad and Prince William’s 12th.

Being distant relatives is also the case with William’s brother, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle. Prior to their royal wedding in 2018, the pair learned that they are related through a late ancestor of the Queen Mother named Ralph Bowes. The High Sheriff of County Durham Ralph Bowes was an ancestor of Markle from 15 generations ago.
