Are the Kardashians Becoming Worse Actors After 16 Seasons?

It’s one of the most successful TV shows around, and for many, Keeping Up With the Kardashians defines reality television. The show introduced viewers to the large, rambunctious Kardashian-Jenner family, spawned multiple spinoffs, and kickstarted an empire that led to cosmetics lines, fragrance launches, and much more.

While the Kardashians have many fans and thousands of viewers, the critics have been speaking out lately about the famous family’s efforts on their reality show, and whether or not the show is just a little too fake.

What criticism has ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’ received?

In 2007, Keeping Up With the Kardashians debuted on the E! network. For most people, it was their first time seeing or hearing about the Kardashian clan, although Caitlyn Jenner, known then as Bruce Jenner, was a famous Olympian.

People loved their loudness and the way they interacted with each other in a very real manner. Over the years, viewers have grown up with the Kardashians, and seen their favorites on the show get married, have babies, and go through significant life changes.

However, as the Kardashians have grown and changed, so too has their reality show. In the past several years, the perceptions around the family seem to have shifted slightly, and fans seem to feel as though they are less relatable. Many critics have spoken out about moments on the show that seem very staged and magazine articles have pointed out specific storylines and scenes in the show’s history that seem to indicate there isn’t much spontaneity happening on set.

Most recently, when the cheating scandal between Tristan Thompson, Jordyn Woods, and Khloe Kardashian erupted earlier this year, many critics seemed to believe that the whole thing was a setup, designed and executed to bring more viewers to the show.

Are the Kardashians bad actors?

Even if many of the show’s moments and scenes are staged, it seems as though the big problem that people have with the Kardashians these days is their lack of believability. One Reddit user pointed to scenes in the most recent season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians as an example of what bad actors the Kardashians are, saying that the interactions between Kris Jenner and Kylie Jenner seemed totally forced and just over-the-top bad acting.

Other fans online have chimed in, with various reasons for the show’s decline in believability. One user claimed that Kanye West being allowed to have creative input into the show has changed the direction – and not for the better.

Others believe that the family isn’t capable of acting out the more complex emotions dictated by a script. The general feeling in the online community, never the biggest fans of the Kardashian family, is that the show has become “cringeworthy.”

Will people continue to watch ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’?

Season 16 of Keeping Up With the Kardashians just ended, and it’s unclear whether or not the negative press could affect the show’s future. Certainly, the numbers aren’t being affected, as the season sixteen finale garnered impressive ratings, showcasing the fallout of the cheating scandal.

It seems that for the foreseeable future, the Kardashians aren’t going anywhere, and will retain their spot on E! for some time to come. Still, there will likely come a point when viewers have had enough of what they perceive as fake television.

Viewers can keep up with the famous reality family when Season 17 of Keeping Up With the Kardashians premieres this fall.
