Are Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Friends In Real Life?

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are comedic royalty in their own rights. Tina Fey is well known for her roles on 30 Rock (where she is also a writer), Date Night, and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Amy Poehler is known for her comedic roles in Parks and Recreation, Inside Out, and Alvin and the Chipmunks

While they may be great on their own, there is no denying that when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler star in a movie together it ends up being sheer side-aching comedic genius. The first place fans became aware of the dynamic duo’s onscreen chemistry was when they played together in Saturday Night Live.  They went on to star in three major movies together. These include Baby Mama, Mean Girls, and Sisters

With such a great onscreen chemistry, fans wonder if the two have a relationship off screen. Are Tina Fey and Amy Poehler friends in real life? Here’s what we know.

Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler are BFFs

The bubbly blonde and cool brunette are actually best friends in real life – and they have been so for more than two decades now. They aren’t just best friends, but the epitome of all best friend goals. They have supported each other in their personal lives and careers for more than twenty years, and no matter how hectic their lives get, they always make time for one another.

They met at an improvisation class

The first time the dynamic duo met was at the ImprovOlympics in Chicago. The owner, Charna Halpern, immediately recognized similarities in the Poehler and Fey. During a class they had together, the two then bonded over beauty hacks. Tina Fey had just learned that you could shape your eyebrows through plucking and waxing them. The first person she decided to share this revelation was Amy Poehler, who remembers the conversation as her first real beauty lesson.

In her memoir, Yes, Please, Amy remembers the meeting like this: “there was another new improviser in another one of her [Charna’s] classes whom she thought I would really like. Her name was Tina and she was like me but with brown hair.” Another section in her book read “She was sharp, shy, and hilarious. We took classes together and sat in the back. She would whisper funny and harsh things about Del [our improv coach] to me…”

Their most famous ‘SNL’ sketch

Perhaps the most famous Fey-Poehler sketch from Saturday Night Live is the “Katie Couric and Sarah Palin interview.” This sketch was originally intended for just Tina Fey on her own. Fey, however, begged the writers to change it so that Poehler was included. She said that her “background is in improv, not stand-up” so she felt more comfortable with a partner… and who better to team up with then her real life best friend? The rest, of course, is history.

Already planning to marry their kids to each other

Not only are they best friends, but Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are already planning to be in-laws together. They’ve decided that they will marry off Poehler’s sons, Archie and Abel, to Fey’s daughters, Alice and Penelope. The four children are roughly the same age. Fey and Poehler have even gone so far as to decide what they will wear to the children’s future weddings.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tina said, “We have committed that we’re both going to wear peach to the wedding. I talked to Faith Popcorn about it and the trend is going to come around right about the time that they should get married.” While they’re probably joking, it would be a sweet sentiment.
