Who Is Ariana Grande’s Friend, Liz Gillies?
Ariana Grande has been in the spotlight for years now, but never more so than in the last year. Everything she posts on social media becomes a topic of conversation, from her engagement (and subsequent breakup) to Pete Davidson to the recent Grammy controversy. Since taking time off from dating, Grande has been spending a lot of time with friends, including Liz Gillies. Here’s how they know each other.
Grande and Gillies starred on Victorious together
While some may forget this, Grande got her big break on the Nickelodeon series Victorious, about a group of teens at a performing arts high school. Grande played Cat Valentine, a ditzy yet lovable girl with bright red hair on the series. Gillies portrayed Jade West, the lead character’s frequent foil with a gothic look. Both actresses were leads on the show for all four seasons.
However, Grande and Gillies actually met prior to appearing in Victorious together. Both appeared in the Broadway production 13 from 2008-2009. Gillies played one of the leads, Lucy, while Grande portrayed a cheerleader named Charlotte.
Gillies appeared in Grande’s video for “thank u, next”
Five years later, the former Victorious co-stars appear to be closer than ever. Gillies appeared in Grande’s music video for her single “thank u, next,” taking the Cady Heron role in the Mean Girls scenes to Grande’s Regina George. Gillies does bear a striking resemblance to Lindsay Lohan, as she addresses during an interview on the Zach Sang Show.
Gilles is a rising star in Hollywood
In addition to her theater roots and time on Nickelodeon, Gillies has appeared in several prominent productions. Gillies had a role in the movie Vacation, a sequel to the original National Lampoon films. In 2018, she was in the dark comedy Arizona. When it comes to the small screen, Gillies has had multiple starring roles. She portrayed Gigi in the short-lived FX series Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and currently stars on the CW reboot of Dynasty.
Grande uploaded a video of her and Gilles
Gillies received attention for appearing in Grande’s video, but that’s not where the most recent intrigue comes from. In a recent video uploaded to Grande’s social media channels, Gillies puts on a performance of the song “Take Me Or Leave Me” from the musical Rent. On Instagram, Gillies wrote a caption to Grande, saying “Thank you for letting me scream the first half of this song in your face for 10 years.”
Grande’s mom, Joan Grande, left a comment on the video, writing, “Liz, I have videos to prove it!!! Hahaha 10 years …. here’s to hearing you two singing it a thousand times more!! What a fabulous night… love you.”
Ariana Grande just broke a major record
Grande has a lot to be celebrating with her friends. In addition to winning the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for Sweetener, Grande currently holds the top three spots on the Billboard chart for singles from her new album, thank u, next. The singer wrote on Instagram about this achievement, saying that she didn’t believe it at first and thanking her fans.
