Criminal mastermind and fairy thief Artemis Fowl is – at last – receiving his movie makeover. The film, based on the 8-book series by science fiction and fantasy author Eoin Colfer, traces Artemis’ journey to restore his family’s fortune. Joining the ranks of other top-notch books being turned into movies this year, Artemis Fowl is set to premiere in the summer.
Following in the footsteps of franchises like Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and Divergent, Artemis Fowl is in good company; thus, it will likely require a great degree of ingenuity to leave a unique mark on the teen sci-fi craze.
Fans of Artemis Fowl have been anxiously awaiting its cinematic reimagining since Disney first announced its plans for a film back in 2013. Six years later, the movie is only mere months away, and the cast set to take on the coveted characters is sure to satisfy.
Who will play Artemis Fowl?
Though directed by five-time Oscar nominee Kenneth Branagh, known for contributing to the comedic tone of the Marvel universe, and featuring a star-studded supporting cast, the titular role in Artemis Fowl will be played by newcomer Ferdia Shaw, according to IMDb.com.
The lucky 13-year-old boy, currently residing in Kilkenny, Ireland, beat out over 1,200 other hopefuls for the lead role in the series likely to catalyze his career, according to RTE.
‘Artemis Fowl’ supporting cast
While Ferdia Shaw is new to Hollywood, an ensemble with rather impressive work histories will star alongside him. Dame Judi Dench will play Commander Root (leader of the fairy police force), while Josh Gad will star as the kleptomaniac dwarf Mulch Diggums, according to DigitalSpy.com.
Dench, an Oscar winner (and seven-time nominee), is known for her work in Philomena, Shakespeare in Love, and James Bond. Dench narrates the trailer below – with a perfect combination of poise and peril – to bring the breadth of this cinematic endeavor to life.
Josh Gad, recently appearing in Murder on the Orient Express and Beauty and the Beast, is widely known for portraying Olaf in Frozen. He also snagged a Golden Globe for his work on Broadway’s The Book of Mormon.
Shaw, Dench, and Gad are joined by Lara McDonnell (The Delinquent Season, Love, Rosie) as the kidnapped fairy Captain Holly Short, as well as Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Miranda Raison, and Nikesh Patel.
What is the ‘Artemis Fowl’ movie about?
The Artemis Fowl movie will combine the first two novels: Artemis Fowl and Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident.
The first novel introduces Artemis Fowl – genius-turned-criminal-mastermind – and follows his journey to reclaim his family’s lost riches. Along the way, he kidnaps a fairy with help from his bodyguard, Domovoi Butler, and gets wrapped up in a mystical world featuring a fairy police force, criminal dwarves, and goblin rebellions.
While offering a nail-biting adventure story, the first novel mostly serves as an introduction to the narrative’s mystical world and the characters who inhabit it; thus, it’s no surprise that the film creators chose to combine the first two novels for the movie premiere.
Book two, The Arctic Incident, centers around Artemis Fowl’s attempt to rescue his father from the Russian Mafia. Yes, the Mafia. This series, while no doubt a fantasy/sci-fi tale, doesn’t shy away from weaving a little real-world crime into its story.
The film – set to hit theaters on August 9, 2019 – will debut soon after Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King and less than three months after Aladdin. It looks like Disney may be set up for a few box office hits in a row!
