Ashley Graham Says Doing These Things Helped Her Feel Her Best During Pregnancy
Supermodel Ashley Graham is known – and loved – for her authenticity. An advocate of body positivity, the supermodel is expecting her first child – a baby boy – with husband Justin Ervin some time next month.
An avid poster on social media, Graham recently shared how she’s incorporated certain practices into her daily routine – plus a healthy mindset – that have her at peak performance during her pregnancy.
Always keeping it real
Graham is a firm believer on being real, including online. Revealing past feelings of insecurity, now the first-time mom-to-be finds it empowering to be her authentic self. “It was always about what others thought about my body, until I gained a voice,” she told Allure. “Now I get to tell people what I think of my body.”
The model practices what she preaches, avoiding any retouching of photos and encouraging other women to keep it real on social media. “The more you’re vulnerable with the people you’re sharing with, the easier it is to be who you are. That’s why I always tell women, just be who you are. Don’t retouch your photos,” she told Today.
Graham maintains the same rule at work, stressing to photographers not to retouch her pics. “I have to have that conversation with photographers all the time,” she revealed on Today. “I’ll actually go to the monitor and I’ll say to them, ‘You see that dimple right there? Do not retouch it out. You see that new red stretch mark… don’t retouch it.’”
In August, Graham posted a practically naked pic of herself with her hand covering her breast to show off her pregnancy and all the changes that come with it. As always, she kept the photo completely unfiltered to reveal her stretch marks and veins, writing in caption, “Same same but a little different.”
Last month, Graham spoke about the Instagram photo during a segment on the EllenTube series Fearless, revealing that she struggled with posting the vulnerable pic. “The reason I had posted that original photo, I had just announced that I was pregnant and I thought then I was gonna feel good, and I didn’t. I felt, I just felt terrible,” Graham tearfully admitted, according to Yahoo! Lifestyle.
The expectant mom chose to forge ahead, realizing that there were other women with the same struggles she was dealing with. “That morning I was like, get it together, Ashley. There’s other women out there that are going through the same thing as you. Why don’t you have a dialogue with them?” she shared. “This is a new body that I’m walking into, why don’t I just put myself out there with this new body? I felt so isolated, I felt so alone.”
Finding her way
Graham seems to have found her own path on feeling her best during this transforming time of her life. Sharing her personal discoveries with her followers, Graham revealed her physical regimen as well as a healthy attitude on inevitable extra pounds during pregnancy.
“Throughout my pregnancy so far I’ve gained 50lbs. And the best part is, I don’t care!” Graham posted on Instagram earlier this week. “I have never felt better, and I am so thankful that my body and son have allowed me to be as mobile and flexible as I have been.”
She went on to describe some specifics that have made pregnancy a much smoother journey. “Between working out, yoga, acupuncture and lymphatic massages- I finally feel like I figured out this whole pregnancy thing and how to feel my best,” Graham wrote.
Graham also revealed some helpful words of wisdom she received that helped her connect to other expectant moms. “The one piece of advice that my stylist, Jordan Foster, gave me was, make pregnant friends,” Graham said, according to SheKnows. “None of my friends were in relationships, let alone pregnant. And now I have nine pregnant friends.”
