‘Avengers: Endgame’: Chris Evans Has Fans Freaking Out Over His Crying and Joking
Marvel’s new movie, Avengers: Endgame, is the most anticipated film coming out this month. On April 26th, the beloved Marvel superhero team will come together to bring back their allies after Thanos nearly destroyed the universe in the 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War.
Aside from being an epic sequel to Infinity War, Endgame is also getting buzz for actor Chris Evans and his famous role as Captain America. It’s a very emotional time for Captain America fans right now, but Chris Evans himself has been adding even more to the hysteria. So what exactly is going on and why are fans freaking out?
‘Avengers: Endgame’ is Chris Evans’ last appearance as Captain America
In 2011, Chris Evans came on board the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Steve Rogers/Captain America in the film Captain America: The First Avenger. Since then, he had been a well-known face in MCU by having a notable role in six films and appearing briefly in two.
However, in late 2018, Chris Evans officially announced that the fourth Avengers film, Avengers: Endgame, would be his last.
“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4,” he tweeted. “It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”
His contract was supposed to only last until the third movie, Infinity War, but Chris Evans had agreed to prolong his stay in MCU to really wrap up the storyline in Endgame.
What did Chris Evans do to make fans freak out?
After being in MCU for almost 10 years, Captain America has become a fan favorite and, unsurprisingly, it’s hard for some people to see Chris Evans – the most recognizable person to have been in the role – leave the franchise. Fans have become even more emotional when they saw what Chris Evans had to say about it.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 37-year-old actor talked about his reaction to the upcoming Avengers movie.
“This one’s really good. I choked up like three times,” he said.
Throughout the conversation, Chris Evans proceeded to made jokes about his character dying, saying that he only watched the first half of the film because he was dead after that.
“After I die by Tony’s hand, I just said, ‘You know what? I can’t watch this,'” he shared. “…It’s hard. Seeing my own death. It’s going to be a long movie, that’s for sure. The first edit clocked in over three hours. My funeral’s like an hour.”
The Hollywood Reporter pointed out several times that Chris Evans was only joking, but that did not stop fans from reacting wildly on social media speculating on whether Steve Rogers would really die. His death was already something people had been thinking about for a long time since Chris Evans is such an iconic Captain America actor that many cannot imagine Marvel replacing him with someone else – hence, the character might have to die. However, Chris Evans himself saying that he cried during Endgame and actually talking about Captain America’s death as if it could be real did not sit well with fans.
“Chris Evans, you really have the nerve to joke about Steve’s death? Is everything a joke to you?” one person tweeted.
“Right, no, but if Chris Evans cried and he has already seen the script and acted in those scenes, how are any of us meant to cope with Avengers: Endgame?” someone else said.
Whether Chris Evans was joking or really hinting at something, fans cannot know for sure until the movie comes out.
Avengers: Endgame will hit theaters on April 26, 2019.
