‘Avengers: Endgame’: How Long Before Fans Get Their Own ‘Black Widow’ Movie?

One of the most popular Marvel superheroes is the intense Russian assassin Natasha Romanoff, more commonly known as Black Widow. Scarlett Johansson is the actress responsible for playing the character on screen and has consistently made an impression on fans ever since her first appearance in 2010’s Iron Man 2.

With the exciting revelation that Marvel is planning a film based around the exploits of Black Widow, fans are now wondering what the movie will cover and when they can expect to see the finished product.

Who will be in the movie?

The Black Widow movie is still in the planning stage, so no exact casting details have been confirmed, although IMDb includes David Harbour and Rachel Weisz in the cast listing.

It is certain that lead actress Scarlett Johansson will be reprising her role as Romanoff, but not much past that. However, there is some significant buzz that other popular Marvel characters could be making an appearance in the film, including Sebastian Stan’s character Bucky Barnes (a.k.a. “Winter Soldier”) and possibly even Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye character, Romanoff’s longtime partner and best friend.

Marvel films are well-known for cameos, and although fans can’t expect to see Stan Lee (who sadly passed away in late 2018), Robert Downey Jr. could make an appearance.

The Black Widow character first became familiar to audiences in the 2010 movie, and in all their films since, has enjoyed friendly rivalry and sarcastic banter with Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.

What will it be about?

Just like the cast, plot details are completely unknown. It is even possible that they haven’t been fleshed out. One thing is certain, however – out of all the Marvel superheroes, Black Widow has a wealth of material to draw from.

From her traumatic assassin training to the early years of working with the Avengers Initiative, Natasha Romanoff is a fascinating, multi-layered character.

The most likely scenario is that the Black Widow movie will be an origin film, detailing how Romanoff became such a lethal force within the Avengers.  The film will also probably be a standalone story, not tied into the timeline of current events.

When will the movie be released?

Another unknown – the release date. It seems likely that the film will be released sometime between 2020 and 2022, but again, this is pure speculation.

Marvel is known for not rushing projects, preferring to spend adequate time fleshing out details of plot and character development in order to ensure that they release a superior film. Knowing the popularity of the character with audiences, Marvel will probably release the film over the summer, making it a big-budget blockbuster.

Two things work in favor of the Black Widow movie project – the fan push for the movie to happen, and the support of the lead actress Scarlett Johansson.

Fans of the franchise have been asking for the film for years, and are seemingly overjoyed that it is finally happening. For her part, Johansson has stayed consistent in her support for the character, and even though she is now an A-list actress, seems truly attached to the role of Natasha Romanoff. In a recent interview, Johansson spoke out about her love for the character, and how much she would like to further explore her story.

Johansson admits that she thinks there is a definite opportunity to dive into how the Widow came into her own and began making active, independent choices for herself.

No matter what ends up becoming of the Black Widow movie project, fans can still get their Natasha Romanoff fix when Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters on April 26th.
