‘Avengers: Endgame’: How Much Money Will Robert Downey Jr. Earn for Playing Iron Man?

Everyone expected Avengers: Endgame to be a massive hit. But not everyone anticipated it being this huge. The Marvel movie earned a jaw-dropping $350 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend and took in $1.2 billion worldwide. That’s almost $100 million more than its predecessor Infinity War earned in its first weekend in theaters last year. It now holds the record for the biggest opening weekend box office in U.S. history.

There are undoubtedly a lot of people in Hollywood celebrating those record-breaking numbers. One of them is probably Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr., who stands to earn a staggering amount of money thanks to the film’s popularity.

It’s no secret that Downey has been well-paid for playing Iron Man. While he was paid just $500,000 to star in the 2008 movie that kicked off the current MCU saga, his paydays have gotten exponentially larger as the films have grown in popularity. But the time the first Avengers movie came out four years later, he was earning $50 million.

What’s the secret to the superstar’s supersized salary? After it became clear just how popular Iron Man was, he was able to renegotiate his deal to earn a percentage of the total revenue from Marvel movies in which he appeared, according to the Hollywood Reporter. At the time, one source was estimated that he was getting 5% to 7%, though that number was not confirmed.

His $75 million Infinity War payday

The actor’s unique deal with Marvel has paid off handsomely. For last year’s Infinity War, he earned at least $75 million, a source told the Hollywood Reporter. That movie grossed more than $2 billion.

Even when he’s barely in a movie, he still makes a lot of money. The actor’s scenes for Spider-Man: Homecoming took three days to shoot, but earned him $5 million, or $1.66 million per day.

How much will he make for Endgame?

Avengers: Endgame has been in theaters for less than a week, so it’s still too early to know what Downey’s ultimate take-home will be. But considering that the movie is already in the top 10 of highest-grossing movies of all time, his earnings will be considerable. They are also almost sure to top his Infinity War paycheck.

Infinity War earned just over $2 billion worldwide. Endgame is already at $1.5 billion. Since it seems inevitable that Endgame will do better at the box office than its predecessor, Downey should take home more than $75 million.

What do other Marvel actors earn?

Downey is almost certainly the highest-paid actor in the Marvel universe, but his co-stars aren’t exactly earning peanuts. Scarlett Johansson will reportedly earn $20 million to star in and produce an upcoming Black Widow solo movie. Chris Evans, who played Captain America, and Chris Hemsworth, who played Thor, have earned $15 to $20 million for their more recent Marvel movies, per the Hollywood Reporter.

Less-established actors get smaller paychecks. Chadwick Boseman was paid $2 million for Black Panther, according to the trade publication. Brie Larson earned $5 million for Captain Marvel.
