‘Avengers: Endgame’: Marvel Cut a Planned Rematch Between These Two Characters

Eleven years into the biggest film series of all time, Marvel Studios feels like an unstoppable force. And 2019 — thanks to its three billion-dollar releases — is easily the most noteworthy step yet. Perhaps that’s why the backlash against the Marvel Cinematic Universe also geared up accordingly. Of everything Marvel Studios accomplished in 2019, Avengers: Endgame was easily the highlight.

The film earned $2.8 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of all time. And even more impressively, Avengers: Endgame provided a satisfying culmination of everything the MCU had introduced up to that point. Yet, even with a three-hour runtime, the film couldn’t fit in all the ideas directors Joe and Anthony Russo originally wanted to include in the epic superhero film.

Epic ‘Avengers: Endgame’ battles

In Avengers: Endgame, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes try to undo the devastation Thanos unleashed when he “snapped” half of life out of existence. As such, the stakes have never been higher for the Avengers. So “the fight of [their] lives,” as Captain America calls it, was always going to involve some intense combat.

The first two-thirds of Avengers: Endgame features its fair share of action, as the heroes assemble and carry out a “time heist.” Most notably, Cap’s showdown with, well, himself stands out as one of the action-heavy highlights. But that’s nothing compared to what the final act of Avengers: Endgame has in store.

We’re, of course, referring to the final showdown between every hero in the MCU and Thanos’ army. The producers have already talked about how challenging it was to find time for every character. With such an expansive cast, some fan favorites still didn’t get the chance for revenge.

Hulk vs. Thanos, round 2

Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor all face off against Thanos. Likewise, Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch each nearly take out the Mad Titan on their own. But poor Hulk — as we’ve previously lamented — never had the opportunity to fight him again.

Of course, early on in Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos handily defeated Hulk. For the rest of the film then, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) is unable to get the big green guy out to aid in the fight. That sets the stage for Banner and Hulk to merge by the time we see them in Avengers: Endgame.

What would a fight between Thanos and Smart Hulk have been like? We may never truly know. But the new book Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame – The Art of the Movie reveals we almost got the chance to see it happen. A piece of artwork from the book even shows Hulk seizing the chance to deliver a mean uppercut to the villain.

Who Hulk could still fight

Although this moment would have been a great payoff for Avengers: Endgame fans, that third act is already hectic as it is. It’s astonishing the Russos are able to fit as much in the film as they ultimately did. Since we already know Hulk alone isn’t enough to take on Thanos, the directors probably felt such a battle would have felt repetitive.

Still, Ruffalo’s Hulk hasn’t left the MCU yet. In fact, we’re hearing talk about what his role could be going forward. The actor even has some ideas about who Hulk could face off against next.

Reportedly, Ruffalo would like to see Hulk versus Wolverine happen on-screen. Since this is how the future X-Man was brought into the comics, perhaps such an introduction could be translated into the MCU. We’ll just have to wait and see what Marvel Studios has planned beyond Avengers: Endgame.
