‘Avengers: Endgame’ Theory: Could Shuri Actually Be Alive?

In Avengers: Infinity War, we saw many of our favorite characters “dusted” in The Decimation, while others were left to pick up the pieces. However, not every character was given this treatment, and their fate was left unknown.

But on March 26, 2019, Marvel released a series of posters showing the dead or “fallen” characters in black-and-white, while those who are still alive at the start of Avengers: Endgame are in color. While Thor: Ragnarok’s Valkyrie was confirmed alive, another previously undetermined character, Shuri, was classified as dead. However, things aren’t always as they seem. Here’s why Shuri could still be alive.

Here’s who was dusted

In case you need a recap, these are the characters who we saw fade away after Thanos snapped his fingers. In Wakanda, there was Bucky Barnes (aka White Wolf, fka the Winter Soldier), Black Panther, Groot, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon. On Titan, Mantis, Drax, Star-Lord, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man were all dust in the wind. And in the end-credit scene, we see SHIELD agents Maria Hill and Nick Fury disappear as the world around them falls apart.

Ant-Man and the Wasp, which came out after Infinity War, also addressed the snap in the end-credits scene. While Ant-Man stays alive inside the Quantum Realm, the final shot shows that Hope Van Dyne, Hank Pym, and the newly recovered Janet Van Dyne, who were monitoring Scott Lang on his journey, are suddenly no longer there — indicating that they were dusted.

Shuri’s fate was unknown until now

Though Shuri was in Wakanda at the time of The Decimation, she was presumably still in her lab. The last we saw the supergenius, she had been fighting, then fell through a window with a member of the Dora Milaje, and we didn’t see her get up. However, there was no indication at that moment that she was dead.

So, we’re supposed to assume, given the recent poster, that Shuri was dusted off-screen. But why wouldn’t they show that? Yes, it would have taken a lot of time to show every character from the Marvel Universe that was dusted, but she was an important part of the plot. It would make sense if we got a quick shot of her being dusted if that was the case.

These are the possibilities

There are numerous possibilities here, not just the obvious ones, so let’s dig in:

Theory 1: Shuri was decimated in the snap, and it happened off-screen. This is what we’re supposed to accept.

Theory 2: Shuri was killed in another way. The characters in black-and-white all “died” during Infinity War, but not all in the snap. Gamora seemingly died when Thanos sacrificed her for the Soul Stone, Loki was killed by Thanos on the ship in the very beginning, and Vision’s body is seen clearly after the snap, having previously died when Thanos removed the Mind Stone. So it’s possible that Shuri died, but not from The Decimation.

Theory 3: Here’s where things get interesting. What if Shuri is simply “presumed” dead? In the first Endgame trailer, below, if you pause the video at 1:16, you see that Bruce Banner is looking at photos of those who are, for lack of a better word, missing. Scott’s face is the one he is looking at, but the next photo in the rotation is of Shuri. Her photo then changes to Peter Parker’s.

So what does this mean? Well, for one thing, we know that Scott didn’t actually disappear. He’s simply presumed missing, likely because he hadn’t yet found the Avengers, or is still stuck in the Quantum Realm. While we do know that Peter was dusted, the Avengers on Earth may not know that yet. Tony may not have made contact with them at this point. So it’s possible that Shuri is simply “missing” at this time. The issue with this theory is that Bruce, along with most of the other Avengers, were in Wakanda at the time of the Decimation, so they should have been able to check on Shuri.

You can’t really trust your eyes

There’s also a fourth possibility: It’s all a misdirect. The problem with theorizing based on trailers for Marvel films is that they are notorious for lying to the audience. As Chris Evans said recently in his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he “can’t believe they even cut together a trailer, because so much of it is a visual spoiler,” adding “A lot of the characters have —” before stopping himself from revealing anything.

One interesting thing to note: Almost all of the actors in the film who have official social media accounts shared their character poster after they were released. The only exceptions are Evangeline Lilly (Hope/The Wasp), Anthony Mackie (Sam/Falcon), and Dave Bautista (Drax), none of whom have posted anything at all since the posters came out. But Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri, has shared through Instagram Stories over the past couple of days. Does that mean something about her character’s involvement?

Considering how Marvel has “added in” characters in the past to trick us, and, even in the few trailers we’ve seen, has changed who is present at any given moment, it’s hard to believe that Shuri is 100% dead. We’ll have to see when Endgame arrives.
