‘Avengers: Infinity War’: The Big Hint Fans Just Got About the Movie’s Ending
Avengers: Infinity War, the movie Marvel fans have spent years eagerly anticipating, is now mere weeks away. For a while now, there has been a theory going around that the film will end with one of the most audacious and shocking cliffhangers in movie history, lifting from the pages of the Marvel comics.
Now, a new Infinity War trailer has come along, and it strongly suggests that this unbelievable ending might actually happen. If it does, it’s going to be absolutely earth-shattering and will no doubt leave those who do not read the comics stunned.
Here’s a look at the crazy way Infinity War may end, based on the most recent trailer.
Infinity War is the first of two upcoming Avengers movies
The marketing for Infinity War has heavily implied that it is the conclusion of this era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the Super Bowl ad, for instance, Marvel uses the tagline “An entire universe, once and for all.” And Tony Stark says, “So this is it. It’s all been leading to this.”
The average moviegoer might not be aware of the fact that there’s actually another Avengers movie coming out a year later. Originally, Marvel Studios was planning to release Infinity War: Part 1 in May 2018 and Infinity War: Part 2 in May 2019; they’d be splitting the movie up like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Later, those plans changed, and the May 2019 Avengers movie is no longer Infinity War: Part 2. However, it’s still coming out a year after Infinity War as scheduled.
Next: We know this about the fourth Avengers movie.
Thanos appears to still be the villain of the fourth film
At this time, the Avengers movie coming out in May 2019 doesn’t have a title. It’s just being referred to as Untitled Avengers Film or Avengers 4. However, it does appear that this will be a direct continuation of Infinity War more so than Age of Ultron is a continuation of The Avengers.
After all, Thanos seems to still be the villain of Avengers 4. That hasn’t been technically confirmed, but Josh Brolin has suggested that he’s a part of the fourth movie, and during the wrap party for Avengers 4, the crew served a Thanos cake. If two movies come out just one year apart and feature the same villain, who is still alive at the end of the first film, that sounds a lot like a two-parter.
Still, the Russo Brothers have insisted that both films are distinct experiences and that this “isn’t a true two-parter.” But they just might be saying that so that audiences don’t feel like they’re about to get half a movie with Infinity War.
Next: This is probably what’s going to happen by the end of Infinity War.
Thanos will likely get all the stones by the end of Infinity War
One big question fans have about Infinity War is whether the movie will end on a cliffhanger. If it’s effectively part one of a two-parter, this would make sense. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 ended on a cliffhanger, for instance; the final scene involved Voldemort getting the Elder Wand.
With Infinity War, the whole thrust of the movie is that Thanos is trying to get the six Infinity Stones. As soon as he gets them all, he can assemble them into the Infinity Gauntlet, and he’ll be unstoppable. So it would make sense for Infinity War to end with Thanos getting all the stones.
Again, the Russo Brothers have said that both movies are distinct experiences. So if they both have the same villain, for that comment to be true, there needs to be some sort of a big status quo change at the end of Infinity War, such as Thanos assembling the gauntlet.
Next: Another reason to believe that Thanos probably does this at the end of the movie.
The title of the fourth Avengers movie is apparently a spoiler
Something else to consider here is the fact that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said that the title for the fourth Avengers film is actually a spoiler.
Feige later walked that comment back a little, saying that they mainly just want to focus on Infinity War for now. But either way, there appears to be some reason that Marvel doesn’t want us knowing the title of the fourth movie before we see Infinity War.
With that in mind, a prevalent theory is that the title of the fourth film is Infinity Gauntlet. If that’s the case, it would make sense that Marvel wouldn’t want to announce it before Infinity War; that title would give away that Thanos is not defeated by the end of the upcoming film and that he assembles the gauntlet.
So now that we’ve established that Infinity War seems likely to end with Thanos getting his gauntlet, just how big of a cliffhanger is the movie going to have? What will Thanos do with the weapon?
Next: Could this crazy scene from the comics happen in the movie?
In the comics, Thanos wipes out half the universe by snapping his fingers
Ever since Infinity War was announced, there has been one scene that fans of the comics have been dying to see. In the 1991 comic series The Infinity Gauntlet, upon getting all the stones, Thanos simply snaps his fingers. In an instant, half of all living beings in the universe cease to exist.
This affects many of the main characters; Hawkeye and Wong both disappear, for instance. After this iconic moment, our remaining heroes must come together to defeat Thanos. In the comics, this actually happens right at the beginning of the series and is what kicks things into gear.
So for years, comic book fans have been imagining how incredible it would be to see this moment play out on screen.
Next: The latest trailer for the movie features this big hint.
In the latest trailer, Gamora hints that Thanos will have this power
Comic fans were absolutely elated after watching the latest trailer for Avengers: Infinity War. After all, in the trailer, Gamora says the following of Thanos: “The entire time I knew him, he only ever had one goal: to wipe out half the universe. If he gets all the Infinity Stones, he can do it with the snap of his fingers. Just like that.”
Obviously, this is a reference to the comic book scene. The only question is, is it just a nod to the fans? Or is Gamora’s line of dialogue meant to set up Thanos actually snapping his fingers and destroying half the universe in the movie?
If Thanos does wipe out half the universe, the ability to do so would need to have been clearly established beforehand. So it would make sense for Gamora to say something like this earlier in the movie.
Next: Could this be the final scene of the film?
Thanos wiping out half the universe could be the cliffhanger ending of Infinity War
So it seems very likely that Infinity War will end with Thanos getting all of the stones. It’s also somewhat likely that the movie will end with a cliffhanger of some sort in order to propel viewers into Avengers 4 — especially viewers who aren’t even aware that there is a fourth Avengers on the way. And now we have a trailer that blatantly references an iconic, shocking scene from the comics.
It would make all the sense in the world, then, for Infinity War to end with Thanos getting the final stone and using the gauntlet to wipe out half the universe. Perhaps we see characters from all around the Marvel universe disappearing after Thanos snaps. Or perhaps the movie just ends with a closeup of his finger snapping, and we’re left wondering who lived and who died.
Next: Which characters might disappear when Thanos snaps?
Several Avengers could disappear after the snap
If half the universe is wiped out when Thanos snaps his fingers, it doesn’t make sense that none of the Avengers would be affected. In the comics, many beloved characters disappear.
So if that’s the case, it would mean that a bunch of heroes would not be around for Avengers 4. This could be a way for Marvel to change things up and make room for some characters who didn’t get a lot do in Infinity War. Recently, The Russo Brothers did say that some characters who don’t do much in Infinity War will get to do more in Avengers 4.
Perhaps this is because they effectively fill in for some heroes who disappear after the snap. The main heroes like Iron Man and Captain America will likely stick around, but less significant characters — like Scarlet Witch, Vision, Wong, Mantis, etc — might disappear.
Next: This is how the snapping moment is resolved in the comic books.
In the comics, everyone who Thanos wipes out comes back
You might find this theory farfetched; Marvel Studios wouldn’t want to just kill off half of its characters. But keep in mind, in the comics, the Marvel heroes didn’t disappear for good.
By the end of Infinity Gauntlet, everyone who disappeared due to the snap ends up returning; the powers of the stones put things back to normal. This could explain how some characters might disappear after the snap despite being confirmed to appear in Avengers 4; they could be in the movie at the very beginning and at the end.
Phase 4 will supposedly be entirely different than what came before. So it’s possible that the death and destruction caused by Thanos won’t be reversed like in the comics. However, it’s a bit difficult to believe that such a cataclysmic event will just be a part of the MCU going forward.
Perhaps the majority of the world’s deaths are undone, but for whatever reason, one or more of the Avengers stay dead.
Next: If that’s the end of Infinity War, this is what Avengers 4 could look like.
Avengers 4 could be about trying to defeat Thanos and rescue the people who disappeared
This theory about the ending of Infinity War could also shed some light on why the Russo Brothers say that the two upcoming Avengers films are completely distinct stories.
After all, if this theory is correct, it’s not as if Infinity War would end with Thanos still needing to get one of the stones and with the main storyline being left unresolved. Instead, Infinity War would be about preventing Thanos from getting the stones, and that plotline would end in the movie, with the Avengers failing to do so.
Then, Avengers 4 would present the heroes with a completely new mission. Now, a new team of Avengers — missing several of their friends — must go on an adventure to defeat Thanos and hopefully use the Infinity Gauntlet in order to undo the damage he has done. And based on some photos that have leaked from the set, this may involve going back in time, which would set the fourth movie apart from the third one even more.
