‘Bachelor’: Did the Show Pick Mike Johnson as the Next Bachelor and Then Switch to Peter Weber at the Last Minute?
From the moment Johnson stepped out of the limo on Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette, it was clear that he was not like the others. And all it took was him calling out villain Luke Parker for him to solidify a place in viewers’ hearts.
When Brown ended up sending Johnson home, of course, audiences were sad for him. But ultimately, people were a little excited because that meant that Johnson had a chance to become the Bachelor.
Unfortunately, ABC decided to go with Peter Weber for their Bachelor. But what exactly happened to prompt this choice?
Mike Johnson for Bachelor
Johnson was one of the frontrunners to be the next Bachelor. After Brown’s runner up, Tyler Cameron, began dating Gigi Hadid, it seemed like Johnson was a shoo-in for the role.
Even host Chris Harrison was on board.
“Of course he’s a contender [for Bachelor],” Harrison told People once The Bachelorette ended. “How could he not be a contender with that smile? He’s one of my favorite people we’ve ever had on the show. He’s a love of a man. I don’t know him that well, and I consider him a really good friend.”
“He’s just a sweet guy,” he continued. “He gives the best hugs, the best smiles, and the best advice. He’s just a really good man and yeah, of course, he’s a contender.”
But ultimately, the network went a different way.
“Why do I think it wasn’t me?” Johnson said to Entertainment Tonight after Weber was announced as the Bachelor. “I have no idea. I can only speak on my personality and the wonderful man that I am. I do know that Peter and I are two completely different people — both good people, kindhearted people. But I do feel that I’m a bit more outspoken than Peter.”
“I’m a bit louder than Peter is. I have tattoos, and the obvious, I’m black, so we are very diverse and different in that regard as well. And we like different women. I want to make sure the focus is centered around love because that’s what this show is about. So, Peter and I also are attracted to two different types of women as well.”
Did ABC switch Bachelors at the last minute?
Since so many people were rooting for Johnson, Bachelor Nation was a bit surprised when Weber was announced for the position. Many people wondered if the network had actually asked Johnson and then switched him out for Weber at the last minute.
Andy Cohen addressed this rumor on the Sep. 25 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
“What do you think about the rumor that Mike was supposed to be the Bachelor but they switched to Peter last minute?” Cohen asked former Bachelorette Andi Dorfman.
“I will have you know that rumor is false,” she said.
“I have little intel, but the intel I get is the real deal,” Dorfman continued. “They all say they were asked to be the Bachelor. I feel like every year they do that.”
How is Mike Johnson doing now that he isn’t the Bachelor?
Being overlooked for any opportunity is not a good feeling, but Johnson is reportedly moving on.
“He seems to be happy and living life to the fullest,” Cameron recently told Entertainment Tonight of Johnson. “I know a part of him wanted to be the Bachelor, but it seems like he’s bouncing back all right. He’ll do just fine. Mike’s great.”
