‘Bachelor in Paradise’: Dean Unglert Just Posted a Sweet Tribute to His Mom on His Instagram Story
[Spoiler alert for the current season of Bachelor in Paradise!]
Bachelor in Paradise was full of surprises this season, and one unlikely couple is seemingly going strong. Caelynn Miller-Keyes arrived on the beaches of Mexico with a bone to pick with Blake Horstmann. But once the dust settled between the exes, her sights were set on Dean Unglert. Unglert and Miller-Keyes almost didn’t last through Paradise — and we know Unglert’s tragic past thanks to what he divulged on his season of The Bachelorette, too. But now, it seems he and Miller-Keyes are going strong. And he recently shared a personal tribute to his Instagram followers regarding his mother, too.
Here’s what Unglert just posted to his Instagram Story about his mom, and what he’s said before regarding her passing.
Dean Unglert talked about his mother’s death on The Bachelorette
Unglert was a fan favorite on his season of The Bachelorette when he was vying for Rachel Lindsay’s heart. While Lindsay said she wasn’t interested in dating men in their early 20s, she was surprised by Unglert’s maturity level. On the show, we watched as Unglert explained his difficult family situation with Lindsay — and a lot of it centered around his mother’s death.
“My mother was, like, the most amazing woman of all time,” Unglert told Lindsay during a one-on-one date. And he went on to explain that his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when he was just 9 years old. While the cancer initially seemed to go away, it then returned when he was 14. Unfortunately, while battling cancer the second time, she was admitted to hospice. “I had leaned into her and asked her, ‘hey mom, when are you coming home again?'” Unglert recounted. “And she leaned over to me and said, ‘never.’ I still think to this day that that was, like, the hardest moment of my life, to hear her say that.”
After his mother’s death, Unglert’s home life seemed to fall apart, too. He explained that his siblings and father were rarely home — and we saw later in the season during the hometown visits that his relationship with his dad still needed work.
He’s posted about his mother on Instagram before
Unglert’s mother’s death clearly still affects him now, as he noticed the entire dynamic in his family change. And he’s even posted throwback photos to his Instagram of when his mother was still alive. In this post from October 2017, Unglert recounted his experience watching his mother go through treatment.
“I remember being younger and watching my mother, Debbie, endure her breast cancer treatment. Her body was changing quickly and, as a child, I wasn’t really sure what to make of it,” Unglert wrote. And he continued on to explain how her positive attitude through her treatment inspires him daily to face life with a smile. “I learned so much from her during that time, she’s the reason I try so hard to always have a positive attitude and a smile on my face. I look back on those years and hope that she knew just how much unconditional love was felt for her,” he wrote.

Unglert just recently mentioned his mother on his Instagram Story, too. We learned on Bachelor in Paradise that he’s currently living out of a van and seems to be traveling all across the world with Caelynn Miller-Keyes. And after posting a few photos of his adventures rock climbing with his friends, he added a moment that reminded him of his mom.
“I have a feather tattooed on my back because whenever I see one I’m reminded my mom is with me,” he captioned his story of a photo of him holding up a feather. He then added, “I took a nap on a rock today and when I woke up this lil guy was right next to me.”
Despite some drama in Paradise and not everyone approving of his relationship with Miller-Keyes, there’s no doubt Unglert has plenty of support behind him. And fans are certainly glad to see him living his best van life after a tough childhood.
