Bachelor in Paradise is the less serious version of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. It combines the cast from both and they end up drinking a lot and making love connections.
Dean Unglert is returning for another season in paradise. He revealed why it’s hard to stay sober on the show and why he did it anyway.
Bachelor in Paradise reportedly changed its rules around drinking
The show previously got into hot water when there were reports that a contestant was sexually assaulted while filming Season 4. Rules around drinking were changed to contestants getting only two drinks per hour. The crew also reportedly made food more available to the cast.
Wells Adams was the bartender that season and talked about enforcing that rule. “There was a binder with everyone’s picture on it and the rule was you can only have two drinks an hour,” he told The Cheat Sheet. “That was either two beers an hour, two mixed drinks an hour, two shots an hour. And then I was actually the one who had to keep track of it.”
Dean Unglert said it’s hard to stay sober because of boredom
There is alcohol typically available for the contestants on all the shows. However, Bachelor in Paradise has more of a party atmosphere so the drinking is more apparent. Unglert talked about staying sober despite that.
“For the first time in all four seasons, I’ve stayed completely sober the entire time,” he said on the podcast Help! I Suck at Dating. “Which is a challenging thing, in that circumstance, because you get bored a lot, all you wanna do is drink, your friends are drinking, all you wanna do is join them.”
The season hasn’t premiered yet but he’s looking forward to it. “I’m excited to watch it back,” he said. “For the first time, I’m finally like, ‘I don’t have to worry about being drunk and saying something stupid on camera’ because I didn’t get drunk.”
Unglert is still sure he said some stupid things. “But I didn’t get drunk and [do it] … I will say this was probably my best season of Bachelor since the first one.”
He had no intention of getting into a relationship this season
Although the goal of the show is to stay on the island by finding love, Unglert said he had no intention of getting into a relationship. He talked about his mindset on his podcast.
“I’m not saying whether I am in a relationship now or I’m not, but I went on the show with zero intention to leave the show in a relationship,” he said according to E! News. “Almost actually fighting it, to leave in a relationship.”
Some clips of the new season dropped and it showed that Unglert has a new look. He has a mustache and we don’t know yet if the ladies are feeling his new facial hair.
The trailer shows that Blake Horstmann from Becca Kufrin’s season makes connections with multiple women. That situation gets compared to Unglert’s past season when he was trying to date Kristina Schulman and Danielle Lombard. Unglert was continuing to interact with them after filming, which came out on the reunion.
Obviously, Unglert got a lot of backlash for that. It looks like he might stay away from trouble this season with his new strategy of staying sober.
Bachelor in Paradise Season 6 premieres on Monday, August 5 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
