‘Bachelor in Paradise’: Demi Burnett Responds to Hateful Homophobic Messages
Every few seasons of The Bachelor, you come across a true gem of a contestant. This person is usually funny, real, and helps to move the show along. Basically, they save the season from being a snooze fest. Demi Burnett was that person on Colton Underwood’s season.
Fans fell in love with her for her blunt attitude and go-getter spirit. She was so beloved that she even returned for a bit of Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette to help Brown weed out some men who weren’t there for the right reasons.
Now, we have been given another opportunity to have Burnett in our lives as she is going to be on Bachelor in Paradise.
As this season of BIP gets closer and closer, ABC has been airing different promotional clips of the season. One of them showed Burnett kissing another woman.
“I know that I love this girl,” Burnett said in the clip. “I’m just so happy that I found her. And I can definitely picture being with her for the rest of my life.”
Previously, we have only seen Burnett date men, so this was a new side to her for most Bachelor fans.
Fan negative reactions
No matter what you do, there are always going to be people that hate on it. The same is true with Burnett.
People were quick to take to Twitter and spew their disdain.
“This is the first season I WILL NOT watch BIP due to the same sex disgusting behavior on screen,” one user wrote. “I have nothing against their choice of lifestyle but I don’t like to have it shoved down my throat on TV . You ruined your show for me and 300 others.”
The responses got so bad that Burnett posted some of the direct messages that people had sent her.
Since posting the dm, fans and Bachelor contestants alike, have come out in support of Burnett.
Fans defending Burnett
“Always remember that people that spew messages of hate have hate inside their heart,” one fan tweeted. “They aren’t well – they can pretend they are, but they aren’t. It takes effort to be mean and evil. When people are happy and loving, it’s so simple, LOVE one another. Ur effing awesome!”
Former contestant Jason Tartick retweeted the dm, giving his support.
“The hate below is absolutely abominable!” he wrote. “Bravo to Demi for breaking barriers in ‘The Bachelor’ Franchise and on a National Network in the pursuit of love and happiness. Regardless of your sexual preference, love is love is love. I support LGBTQ today and every damn day!
“This makes me sick to my stomach,” former Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe tweeted. “I hate bringing attention to this, but I love that we can all stand up against it. I’m proud of you Demi. And I’m proud of the show for evolving.”
Burnett has never been one to remain quiet. So, she responded to a few of her haters.
“The moment you described the relationship as disgusting is the moment you claimed yourself as homophobic,” she responded to one.
But her fans supported her so much that Burnett didn’t really even have to fight her own battle.
“My DMs are so blown up with love that y’all have drowned out all the hate. It’s 3 am and I’m going to bed with a smile on my face,” she wrote.” Love you all so much. Thank you.”
