‘Bachelor in Paradise’: Why Did Derek Peth and Taylor Nolan End Their Engagement?
There’s a reason that Bachelor in Paradise is a fan favorite, year after year. It’s a chance to see all of the Bachelor and Bachelorette rejects get a second chance at love. And with so many hot young twenty-somethings on a beach with nothing to do but drink, fall in love, and start drama, it’s some of the best television around.
Each year, the majority of the BIP cast comes from the most recent Bachelor and Bachelorette seasons, but there are always a few people peppered in from some older seasons.
This year, production decided to bring Derek Peth back to the beach. Peth first appeared on Jojo’s season of The Bachelorette but most people may remember him from his first time in Paradise. Mostly because he ended the season engaged to Taylor Nolan from Nick Viall’s season of The Bachelor.
Since Peth is back on the beach, something obviously must have gone horribly wrong between him and Nolan. But what?
What happened between Nolan and Peth?
At the end of season four of Bachelor in Paradise, there were a lot of couples who seemed strong but only one pair got engaged, Peth and Nolan. They were together from pretty much the first moments of Paradise and remained together throughout the whole season.
When they first left the show, they seemed stronger than ever but being on a secluded beach together and going back into the real world are two very different things.
Some say distance makes the heart grow fonder but in Nolan and Peth’s case, it broke up their relationship.
“It was very stressful at the end… I continue to process [the breakup] all the time,” he said on The Morning Toast after the two went their separate ways. “I think that she didn’t want to leave Seattle and she wanted to like travel here and travel there and take advantage of some of this [Bachelor Nation] stuff… And I got my job [in New York City], I have my normal week.”
Peth in Paradise
Now that Peth has healed from his broken engagement, he seemingly has found something special in Paradise with contestant Demi Burnett. The two connected almost instantaneously and at times seemed like the strongest couple on the beach.
But recently, Burnett confessed that she was still thinking about the woman she was dating back home.
“I have Derek in front of me and it feels nice to be around him, but I don’t have Kristian around me, so I don’t know how I’d feel if it was just me and her,” Burnett said in her confessional. “It’s easy for people who are exploring options here because all of their options are here, and one of my options is not here. So that’s where it gets a little difficult for me.”
She later told her friend Hannah Brown how worried she was that Peth might not be able to handle the fact that she was thinking about someone else.
“I’m being very open about something that I haven’t talked about a lot and — not that I’m shutting the door on him — but he deserves to know what’s really going on,” she said. “I owe it to him to tell him — the relationship I had back home is a lot more serious and still means a lot to me. I don’t want to disappoint or hurt him, but it’s killing me.”
Ultimately, Peth was understanding and told Burnett that it was okay that she didn’t know which one of them she wanted and that he would keep fighting for her.
