In the Oct. 27 episode of The Bachelorette Season 16, Crawley held a roast for a group date. The narrative solely focused on the cast’s frustrations with Dale, and Crawley wasn’t impressed.

“If some of these guys are picking up on Dale and I’s relationship and the connection him and I have, guess what? It’s because I like him,” Crawley said in a confessional interview. “So what? I have feelings for Dale. We have a connection. That’s the truth. I’m not trying to hide anything. Hate on. You can’t hate on love, though.”

When Crawley walked off the set of the roast, she seemingly told a producer that the cast’s roast of Dale “wasn’t funny.” Then during the cocktail party portion, Crawley continued to bring up her frontrunner. She also withheld the group date rose and gave it to herself. Meanwhile, The Bachelorette highlighted another behind-the-scenes moment where Crawley seemingly called Dale her fiancé.

“I really don’t think I can sit there and go, ‘You dished on my fiancé so hard,’” Crawley told a producer. “I can’t be doing that, you know? It doesn’t feel right.”

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight’s Lauren Zima, Harrison was specifically asked about the moment Crawley called Dale her fiancé. The host didn’t deny the context of the lead’s remarks. He also didn’t indicate the show was foreshadowing the couple’s happily ever after.

“That did seem a little presumptuous, maybe a little overly optimistic of things to come,” Harrison said.

Meanwhile, Harrison commented on Crawley’s group date, noting it “wasn’t a great look” for the lead to give herself the rose. “I just wanted [the cast] to have a fair shot,” he said. “You could very clearly see on that date, they’re not getting that shot anymore.”

While Harrison didn’t deny that Crawley’s “fiancé” comment was about Dale, some Bachelorette fans are still wondering about the context. Then on the Almost Famous podcast, Crawley’s ex-fiancé, Benoît Beauséjour-Savard, questioned whether the lead’s remark was actually edited.

In the Oct. 30 episode, Beauséjour-Savard revealed some fans theorized The Bachelorette cast made jokes about his Bachelor Winter Games engagement with Crawley. So he wondered whether the show “just cut out the ex-fiancé part.”

“I know Clare, and I know how she is. Why would she have called him her fiancé at that moment, especially in that part?” Beauséjour-Savard said. “She’s walking, you can see the back of her head, so you can’t really read her lips. So it’s weird.”
