‘Back to the Future’ Day! Here’s How You Can Celebrate

Back to the Future occupies a special place in the annuls of sci-fi cinema. Blending elements of comedy, action, and adventure, it’s still considered to be among the best even today, in the age of overblown CGI and blockbuster superhero movies. There’s something singularly entertaining about Marty McFly and Doc Brown’s adventures through time and space, looking forward to a not-so-distant future that’s slowly become a reality. With 2015 being the year the duo traveled to in Back to the Future II, we finally can celebrate the day we’ve all been waiting for.

Various memes have muddied the waters as to what the fateful day actually is, but make no mistake: It’s October 21, 2015. The future that the 1989 movie posited is far different than the one that actually occurred. We still don’t have self-tying shoes or flying cars, and Jaws never made it past its third sequel. Even so, there were some surprisingly prophetic moments that Back to the Future II completely nailed, all of which are worth remembering. So how can you take part in this momentous occasion? Here are a few ways you might enjoy.

1. Tune in to Game 4 of the NLCS between the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs

Back to the Future II imagined a future where the Chicago Cubs ended their 100 plus year World Series drought in 2015, and shockingly they may actually end up being right. The Cubs are in the postseason for the first time since the infamous Steve Bartman incident in 2003. If they manage to win the first three games of the National League Championship series against the Mets, October 21 could mark the day they clinch a spot in the World Series against a soon-to-be-decided American League contender. Game 4 kicks off at 5 p.m. PST on TBS, so mark your calendar!

2. Let College Humor tell us just how different the actual future ended up being

Sure the Cubs are in the playoffs, but Back to the Future II didn’t get everything right. College Humor recognized as much in their hilarious animated parody, where they point out the stark difference between an idealized future and actual reality. The last three decades of technological advancements have cut both ways, as College Humor’s video so astutely points out. Check it out above for the full experience!

3. Join in on an anniversary celebration

If that video set the stage for too much doom and gloom, brighten your mood and take part in Los Angeles’ week-long anniversary celebration, running from October 21-25. The package includes an exclusive screening of the movie, a hoverboard exhibition, a guided tour of all the locations the movie was shot on, and an “Enchantment Under the Sea” ’80s dance party. You can see all the details over here if you’d like to get in on the action, so act quick before tickets sell out!

4. Watch the Jaws 19 trailer released by Universal

If there’s one thing Back to the Future II nailed about the year 2015, it’s our modern obsession with sequels. With the Jaws franchise ruling over the late-’80s, it only seemed natural that three decades later we’d be on the 19th installment. While we never quite got that far, the movie was still spot on in terms of the cultural shift in cinema.

5. Get yourself a Hendo Hoverboard

We still haven’t gotten a full-fledged hoverboard, but we’ve at least come close. The Hendo Hoverboard may not be the version that Back to the Future II showed us, requiring a conductive surface like copper in order to achieve the desired effect. A 2014 Kickstarter campaign made the funding possible, and now the company is beginning to send out prototypes to its biggest donors. There’s still a long way to go, but at least it’s progress.

6. Have your own movie marathon

What better way to celebrate a movie’s anniversary than by watching every installment in the franchise? There are three movies, and since they’re not Lord of the Rings special edition long, it’s not hard to imagine knocking them all out in one day. There’s no better way to do that than October 21, so rent the movies from iTunes or Amazon and strap in for a well-deserved Back to the Future marathon from the comfort of your own couch.
