Barack Obama Reveals His Favorite Movies of 2018

Former president Barack Obama has long made a habit of sharing his favorite books and music with the world. This year, he expanded his list of end-of-the-year favorites to include movies as well. (Presumably, he has a lot more time on his hands now to catch up on the latest new releases now that he’s no longer in the White House.)

Obama shared his picks for his top books, songs, and movies on Facebook on Friday. We’ve already covered his picks for the best books of 2018. Now, let’s look at what movies he recommends.

Obama’s picks for the best movies of 2018

Obama’s top movies of the year mirror the films seen on many critics’ best-of lists. He highlighted a mix of blockbusters (Black Panther), indie dramas (The Rider), and thought-provoking documentaries (Minding the Gap). Several of the films he mentioned have already been nominated for major awards, including BlacKkKlansman and If Beale Street Could Talk, which both picked up Golden Globe nominations for best picture (drama).

Here are Obama’s picks for the top 15 movies of the year:

  • Annihilation
  • Black Panther
  • BlacKkKlansman

Other movies Barack Obama loves

While this is the first time Obama has shared a lengthy year-end best of list for movies, he’s dropped hints about his favorite films before. In 2014, he praised Richard Linklater’s film Boyhood, which he called a “great movie.” In 2015, he liked the big-budget sci-fi film The Martian. A few years earlier, he singled out Life of Pi, Argo, and Beasts of the Southern Wild.

He’s called out The Godfather and The Godfather Part II as two of his favorite films of all time. Classics like Lawrence of Arabia, Casablanca, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest also made his best-of-all-time list. And the inclusion of a Spike Lee film among his 2018 favorites should come as no surprise. He and Michelle went to see the director’s acclaimed sophomore film Do the Right Thing on their first date back in 1989.
