‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’: Spoilers From the New Trailer
With Marvel debuting its full-length trailer for Captain America: Civil War, it only seems natural for DC/Warner to come forward with its own superhero infighting, in the form of another teaser for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The movie pits the two most iconic heroes in the DC canon against one another, as it marks the first step toward DC’s ambitious cinematic universe. In terms of the trailer …. well, let’s just say it’s about as spoiler-y as it gets.
Knowing that, if you’re someone intent on keeping all the details of Batman v Superman unknown until its 2016 debut, then you probably shouldn’t watch this trailer. It thoroughly lays out all three acts of the movie, including the appearance of a previously unknown super-villain that unites our embattled heroes in the final moments. With that, here’s everything we learned from the spoiler-tastic second trailer for Dawn of Justice.
1. Our first good look at Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne
The trailer opens with Bruce Wayne (Affleck) exiting a vehicle at some sort of gala, as Clark Kent looks on him for the very first time. Clark seems to know Bruce has at least some sort of tie to Batman, given the all too pointed questions the two men exchange in their initial conversation. It’s the first up-close dialogue we see of Affleck’s try at the role, and it seems like he captures that broody melancholy that defines the Frank Miller Batman so well.
2. The Joker has come and gone already
This won’t be anything close to a Batman origin story, with things kicking off well into the Dark Knight’s timeline as a vigilante. The first significant evidence of this: the offhand reference to the Joker. Bruce, in criticism of Superman, points out to Clark Kent that Gotham “has a bad history with freaks dressed like clowns.” It then cuts to Bruce looking onward at what appears to be the Joker’s graffiti plastered over Robin’s costume. In The Killing Joke comic series, the Joker actually kills the second Robin, Jason Todd, while one fan theory posits that Todd might actually be the Clown Prince himself. Whatever it is, there’s no questioning that Batman’s arch-rival has already left his mark.
3. Enter Lex Luthor
Amid the back-and-forth between Clark and Bruce, we see Jesse Eisenberg step into the fray as Lex Luthor. Even without the trademark shaved head, Eisenberg shines as Superman’s arch-nemesis, delivering the “fast-talking sinister bad-ass” vibe that he mastered in The Social Network. The conversation ends with Lex’s eerily apt observation of Clark: “You should not pick a fight with this person.” As we know, Bruce Wayne does pretty much the exact opposite of this.
4. “The greatest gladiator match in the history of the world”
The following scenes dig into the second act of the movie, focusing on the titular showdown between Batman and Superman. All signs seem to point toward Batman being woefully overmatched, although his ingenuity and intelligence tells us that he’ll discover the usefulness of Kryptonite at some point during their battle. Ironically, Batman seems determined to go to war with the Man of Steel over the collateral damage of Superman’s fight with General Zod, and in doing so looks to be leveling half of Gotham in his own crusade.
5. Batman makes a brief stop in the desert … to fight flying bug creatures?
Some theories out there think the oddly out-of-place footage showing Batman in some desert region could potentially be a dream sequence. This is only further given weight by the presence of flying bug creatures that look surprisingly like Parademons, the comic book mutant henchman of Darkseid. Whatever they are, it seems a peculiar choice to shoehorn them into an already crowded movie, so we’ll se just how that works out for the Dark Knight.
6. Lex Luthor begins to build a weapon against Superman using the body of General Zod
We saw hints at this in the last trailer, but this one pretty much confirms it, with Lex (wearing a white lab coat) gesturing toward Zod’s lifeless body on a gurney. As we know from the comics, Luthor makes it something of a life mission to find ways to weaken Superman, and there’s no better way to accomplish that goal than to study the dead body of a fellow Kryptonian.
7. Spoiler alert: And then along comes Doomsday
Likely a byproduct of Lex’s laboratory tinkering, Doomsday enters into the fray in the final act, uniting our two heroes against a single evil. It’s an interesting choice from Warner/DC to spoil the biggest twist the film has to offer, especially with enthusiasm running high without them telling us the whole story front-to-back. As it is, the ancient Kryptonian beast begins his assault by firing his own heat vision at Batman, only to be saved at the last second by…
8. Wonder Woman
Why spoil one major plot point in a single trailer when you can spoil two major plot points? Wonder Woman jumps in front of Batman to shield him from Doomsday’s attack, with neither the Dark Knight nor Superman seeming to recognize her offhand. As it turns out, the three of them team up to give us a sort of proto-Justice League, soon to be rounded out by the rest of DC’s film lineup over the next five years.
If you wanted to be surprised by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, watching the second trailer is probably not the best idea. That being said, it’s still nice to see a villain other than Lex Luthor or Zod play a main role in a Superman movie, while Ben Affleck’s Batman seems to fill the large shoes of his predecessors. The movie comes out March 25, 2016, so mark your calendars now!
9. An international trailer
[Update, 2/3/2016: A new international trailer (see above) released for Japan shows a few extra seconds of footage of Batman and Superman’s battle.]
