‘Batwoman’: When Will The New Superhero Show Air On The CW?

After Orange is the New Black actress Ruby Rose stepped into Kate Kane’s shoes during the Arrowverse crossover event in December 2018 — Batwoman is officially getting a series order on The CW.  There has been much talk about giving the superhero her own series, but now it’s officially a go.

The Vampire Diaries writer Caroline Dries who is overseeing the series, said, “It was important for us to humanize Kate in a way that made her relatable to the other characters in the Arrowverse, even though we were creating an enigmatic character.”

So what is Batwoman about?

The official description for Batwoman on The CW has just been released. It reads, “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane [Rose] soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

When will the series premiere?

Now that the series has officially been given a pilot order, we can probably expect to see Batwoman premiere in the Fall of 2019. Arrow/Flash director David Nutter will helm the pilot with Caroline Dries writing and producing it alongside, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns.

Presently, The CW is casting the rest of the series including Kate’s father, Colonel Kane —Batwoman’s archenemy Alice,  the former high madame of the Religion of Crime in Gotham, and detective Renee Montoya.

Backlash from fans

Unfortunately, not everyone is excited about the Batwoman series. When Rose put on Kate Kane’s mask –many fans took to social media criticizing the casting. Though the Australian actress has been out since she was 12, many fans thought she should not play the LGBTQ character. As a result, Rose stepped away from social media, but before doing so, she posted a message on Twitter. She said,

Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian, therefore, she can’t be Batwoman’ come from — has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how doy’all flip it like that? I didn’t change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys. When women and when minorities join forces we are unstoppable… when we tear each other down it’s much more hurtful than from any group. But hey/ love a challenge I just wish women and the LGBT community supported each other more, My wish was we were all a little kinder and more supportive of each other…Sending everyone my love and gratitude, it’s been a rollercoaster of a year, this month especially. I am looking forward to getting more than 4 hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next 2 projects. If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone.
