‘Below Deck’: Ashton Pienaar Doesn’t Think He’s the Reason Kate Chastain Quit

Although Kate Chastain from Below Deck walked off the boat after an altercation with Ashton Pienaar, he still doesn’t believe he was the reason she quit.

When producers asked Pienaar about the incident he thinks the blowup between the two of them was basically just the last straw. “I would have to be very egotistical to think that the one blowout with Kate and I was the cause of her leaving the boat,” he said in a Below Deck After Show. “I really think she started isolating herself from the crew. She was getting a lot of negative feedback and I was just the cherry on top.”

Do the other crew members agree? Chef Kevin Dobson, who sat next to Pienaar during the After Show doesn’t think Pienaar was the reason the chief stew quit but is that really the case? Also, there’s one crew member who thinks Pienaar was the exact reason Chastain left that night.

Did she quit after too much backlash?

Chastain also received considerable pushback from Dobson too. Pienaar thinks she finally left because too many people were giving her a hard time. “Kate is used to running these seasons where she’s the main queen bee,” Pienaar said. “She’s got everything under control, she’s got everybody under her thumb, and I think this season was a little bit different for her.”

Sterback said Chastain likes to be in control and create drama. But, “When she’s involved in my opinion, she doesn’t like being shown she’s in the wrong,” he said. “She’ll create drama to make you look stupid. Like this season, I think it was counterproductive because we all didn’t take her sh*t.”

Although she had a contentious relationship with Dobson, he does understand her position. “I can completely understand from her point of view,” Dobson remarked. “She’s put in the time and she’s done the effort. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a golden girl, she’s not no young gun anymore. So for her to be done, it’s like if I were in her shoes, I’d be doing exactly the same thing.”

This crew member thinks Pienaar is the reason that Chastain quit

Deckhand Rhylee Gerber thinks Chastain is a little fed up. “I think Kate is over it,” she said. “I really do. She’s put up with this for a lot of years and I think that she also sees that Captain Lee’s favoring Ashton a little bit and that might be something that scares her. But also, what’s her big statement to make here? You could lose her.”

She adds, “Everybody’s replaceable. I’m replaceable. Kate is replaceable. You’ll find another chief stew but the fact of the matter is she knows what she’s doing, she knows Captain Lee, she knows that boat inside and out, and she knows how to run a crew.”

Gerber thinks Chastain was “playing her ace” right now. Gerber followed Chastain as she packed, trying to talk her out of leaving. At the time, she had mixed feelings. “I don’t want her gone, but at the same time, Ashton’s responsible for her leaving. I’m a little giddy to know how the f**k that’s gonna go down. It’s funny because people think that I’m disrespectful and I’m violent and I’m aggressive. It’s funny the way sh*t works out.”
