‘Below Deck’ Crew Members Thought Ashton Pienaar Was Going to Hit Kate Chastain
Ashton Pienaar from Below Deck was filmed becoming outrageously angry with Kate Chastain. The crew returned to the boat after an evening of drinking and Pienaar became enraged when Chastain mentioned his mother.
Chastain, chef Kevin Dobson, deckhand Tanner Sterback and Pienaar rode back to the boat in a van together. The crew joked about Sterback’s mother. But when Chastain asked Pienaar about his mom, he lunged at her as she sat in the backseat. He was visibly enraged and punched the side of the van’s interior. At one point, Dobson appears to be holding Pienaar back from physically attacking Chastain. Sterback speaks calmly to the bosun to get him to relax.
Pienaar never physically attacked Chastain, but some of the crew members thought he could have hit her. The crew rehashed the incident in the Below Deck After Show and Sterback thought Pienaar was going to punch Chastain.
The altercation could have gotten physical
“[Chastain] takes it that we make fun of my mom,” Sterback recounts. “But that’s not the case at all. That’s what started the whole thing. And Kate brought up something in the car about Ashton and his family. And it became this big issue because he doesn’t like his family involved. So, it escalated very quickly.”
Sterback thought the situation was going to get much worse. “I thought Ash was going to punch her in the face,” he says. Deckhand Rhylee Gerber knows Pienaar from season 6. “Ashton’s a bad drunk,” she says. “He’s either really sloppy because he’s f**king everything, or he’s sloppy because he’s hitting everything.”
Chastain was thankful for Dobson and Sterback
Chastain wonders what would have happened if she wasn’t in the car with Sterback and Dobson. “He punched the window, he came over the seat towards me,” she recounts. “The only reason he didn’t get to me is because Kevin, who hates me, held him back. If I had been in a van with Simone or Courtney, or not two strong males, I don’t know what Ashton would have done.”
Pienaar admits he has had temper issues in the past. He claims that he’s overcome those issues, but realizes that drinking to the point of sloppiness is dangerous. “I’m from Long Island, I deal with meatheads all the time,” Sterback says. “But it was scary. He’s a big dude.” Deckhand Brian de Saint Pern says Pienaar could do “some damage.”
Thankfully, Sterback’s soothing words and tone calmed Pienaar. “And I got a kiss out of it so it worked out great,” he adds. After Sterback got Pienaar to relax a little he leaned over for a kiss from Chastain. “I think I had Stockholm Syndrome at that point,” Chastain says about the kiss. “I’ll be nice to anybody whose nice to me. I was stuck on a boat with a bunch of raging lunatics.” Captain Lee Rosbach sits next to Chastain and shares he is hearing all of this information for the first time. “I am shocked,” he says. He adds that seeing the visual will likely give him an entirely different viewpoint too.
