‘Below Deck’: Did Ashton Pienaar Kiss Kate Chastain Again?

After an extremely awkward bar kiss, Below Deck viewers thought they’d never see bosun Ashton Pienaar try to kiss chief stew, Kate Chastain, again. But alas, Pienaar goes back in again for another shot.

The bosun and chief stew started the season strong, but cracks in their working (and personal) relationship are showing as Pienaar came for Chastain during the last episode. The crew went on a day (drinking) excursion and tension mounted between the two. First, Pienaar complained Chastain was taking too long to get ready.

But later after deckhand Brian de Saint Pern called Chastain a bitch, Pienaar lashed out at her in the crew mess. Chastain is drunkenly seen throwing crew uniforms on the floor. Pienaar angrily claims she’s being disrespectful and she retreats to her cabin in tears.

But he still tried to kiss her again

The Below Deck trailer showed someone coming in to kiss Chastain while she relaxing on a lounge chair. The scene was pulled from the resort excursion, but likely not shown during the last episode. However, a fan recalled the moment and asked what happened.

“@Kate_Chastain#BelowDeck I am sure that it was Brian kissing Kate’s stomach at the resort—but now I can’t find it anywhere. and then didn’t he kiss her fingers before he called her a bitch? Something is going on that Bravo is not sharing with Kate and Brian!!!” the fan tweeted.

Chastain clarified the exchange was with Pienaar. “It was Ashton and it was very uncomfortable. Also the same day that he said I was the problem on the boat that needed to be put in her place,” she replied. Later that day, Chastain called de Saint Pern a “yachtie,” which she thought was a term of endearment. He heartily disagreed.

All’s well, did not end well

Viewers can see that by now, the relationship between Chastain and Pienaar is deteriorating. Since the season wrapped, Chastain has been vocal about how working with Pienaar destroyed their relationship. Pienaar is also making it clear the two are no longer friends.

“She’s making it pretty clear that she’s going after me already on social media,” he told Bravo’s The Daily Dish podcast. “She’s already name calling and getting the misogynistic male stripper name tag thrown my way already. There hasn’t been any drama on camera with her and I yet. So, it’s a clear strategy of her to build up or to put me down already with the fans. “She knows what’s coming and she’s obviously trying to build something against me already. So, we’ll see how it all pans out.” He then clarified, they are definitely not friends.

But he regrets how things were handled and wishes it could have ended differently. “I could have definitely handled things differently from
my end, which I fully agree on,” he continued. “But things could have been handled differently from both sides, and I’m the type of guy that can take myself out of a situation and be like, cool, this is where I went wrong, what I could have done differently, and I think I would just appeal to the audience to understand that there’s always two sides and just see two perspectives.”

He added, “And it’s not only on the show; it’s in life, you know. You might feel so strongly towards one opinion, but it’s not the only opinion. Whether you like it or not there is another side, whether you like the way somebody behaved or what they’re saying to you, it’s coming from somewhere, and it’s not just that those people are crazy.”
