‘Below Deck Med’: Did Chef Kiko’s Nachos Trigger Captain Sandy?

“Vegas” night on Below Deck Mediterranean went more than south when chef Hindrigo “Kiko” Lorran’s version of nachos may have been the final straw for Captain Sandy Yawn.

After coming off a rough charter, Yawn told Lorran he needed to bring it or consider walking away. Lorran took Yawn’s advice to heart. He stayed behind to rest and beef up his chef game while the crew partied in-between charters. He was also determined to give it his all, sharing that he’s not a quitter.

“Her words hurt me a lot today,” a tearful Lorran said in a confessional. “I got my moment and I’m about to show everything I know. And I’ll try my best.” While the guests love the flavor of Lorran’s food, it was the Vegas-style dinner that left everyone feeling a little less than thrilled. But it was Lorran’s nachos that may have been an unpleasant throwback to season 4 that haunted Yawn.

Hannah Ferrier helps Chef Kiko with the menu

Lorran consults with chief stew Hannah Ferrier about the menu asking her if a Vegas-style party means finger food. “So like fried chicken, shrimp cocktails …” he says to her. Ferrier suggests truffle fries and nachos too. “I saw on Google we can do like domino brownies,” Lorran says getting creative.

“This is what I eat in Vegas anyway,” Ferrier tells Lorran. She suggests he removes bruchetta from the menu and then they high five. “Sounds like a Vegas menu to me!” she says.

The guests think the food resembles a child’s birthday party

The guests, who have been extremely gracious, don’t criticize the food but note that the dishes are a little pedestrian. Ferrier knew the crew was in trouble when she started seeing the massive amount of fried food coming from the kitchen. “What I’m seeing Kiko is sending out, like this is not what I had in mind,” she said in a confessional.

Bosun Malia White helps to carry the dishes and she delivers the plate of nachos to the table. “That is disgusting,” White says in a confessional. “I don’t want to be the one to tell Kiko I can’t serve that to the guests.” She puts the platter off to the side and tells Christine “Bugsy” Drake where she left the platter.

Yawn wanders into the galley and sees the parade of fried food. She says nothing but looks stunned. The guests remark that this is the most fried food they’d eaten in years. Lorran also tells Drake to serve the brownies while they are still eating dinner, suggesting the meal is a buffet. Drake seems confused but still delivers the platter.

The nachos bring back bad memories for Captain Sandy

Drake encounters Yawn in the hallway and lets her know Lorran is suggesting that she deliver the brownies during dinner. Yawn tells her to return the brownies and wait until dinner is over. “That concerns me,” Yawn says in a confessional. Yawn visits with the guests and asks about dinner. They are polite, sharing the food was good but an excessive amount of fried food was served.

She spies the nachos on the table. “What is that?” Yawn becomes increasingly concerned. “It’s still tasty,” the guests reassure her. Yawn apologizes and the guest says, “It’s like a kid’s birthday party!”

“This is never served on a table to a client on a superyacht,” Yawn says in a confessional. “In a million years. Ever.” Yawn then asks Drake why she put the nachos on the table knowing they were not good. “No! You have to call me!” Yawn urges Drake.

Memories of Chef Mila

“Hannah, you didn’t serve Mila’s nachos why’d you serve those,” Yawn says to Ferrier who is walking up the stairs. Ferrier claims she didn’t serve the nachos. “The nachos was shocking,” Yawn said in a confessional. “Especially after the last charter season.”

Yawn had a chef problem last season. Chef Mila Kolomeitseva was not only seen licking a steak on camera, but she served nachos from an Old El Paso pre-made ingredients.

Production flashed back to Yawn telling Ferrier the nachos looked terrible. “I’m not sending it out,” Ferrier said to Yawn.

Lorran later shares that he followed Ferrier’s lead but Yawn no longer wants to hear it. “Kiko the nachos are honestly, yeah … ” Yawn says as she has no words. “It’s really bad.” He admits he Googled Vegas-style food but Yawn doesn’t want to hear it.

“Captain, out of total respect if you want to fire me, for anything like I try,” he says. She suggests they just get through the charter.
