‘Below Deck Med’: Which Surprising Crew Member Made João Franco’s Dream Team List?
Below Deck cast members are often asked which crew members would be on their dream team. Both Captain Lee Rosbach and chief stew Kate Chastain have had to address that question on a number of occasions.
Rosbach recently shared that obviously Chastain was his number one pick. But he also dipped into the Below Deck Mediterranean team and said he’d love to work with deckhands Colin Macy-O’Toole and Jamie Jason. Chastain would go with chef Ben Robinson and added she loved the crew from season six. “Give or take a couple of them,” she added.
When bosun (and now captain) João Franco chatted with Macy-O’Toole on his new podcast, Radio Check he shared that he’d love one surprising crew member to be on his dream team.
His dream team includes one crew member who frustrated him
Macy-O’Toole asked Franco to assemble an “all-star” crew. “That’s a difficult one, I haven’t seen all seasons,” Franco admits. “Obviously, mate … you’d be the first I’d call as you know.” Franco and Macy-O’Toole formed a strong bond during their two seasons together and continue to be close friends to this day.
But then Franco made a comment that seemed to be in complete contrast to how he felt while filming season four. “I think Jack [Stirrup],” he said. “Jack was really good. I really enjoyed our last season. I really enjoyed Jamie [Jason] as well. Jamie I think is a hard worker.” He adds that he understands how it is a challenge for women in the industry too, especially as a deckhand.
Franco then drifts back to Stirrup. “Jack for sure,” he said. “I mean, just for pure entertainment.” He adds he’d also love to have stew Anastasia Surmava too.
Wait … Jack? Really?
By the time season four wrapped, Stirrup had already endeared himself to the entire crew. Including Captain Sandy Yawn. However, his beginnings on the boat weren’t all that easy. Known for doing as little work as possible, Franco often seemed to be at his wit’s end with Stirrup. He even made him “to-do” lists just to motivate the deckhand to get something accomplished. “It got so bad where João was literally hand writing one to five or one to 10 things that Jack had to do by the end of the day,” Macy-O’Toole shared during the Below Deck Med After Show.
So the fact that Stirrup made his “all-star” list is maybe a little surprising. Stew Aesha Scott shared that Stirrup was even lazier than what cameras caught. “The funniest part of Jack slacking was when Hannah was like, ‘Oh do you guys know where something is?’ And Jack is like, ‘No I don’t remember sorry,’” she shared in the After Show.
But then, “He says to Trav, ‘I know where it is but I don’t want to go and help do I?’ So he’s pretending he didn’t know so he didn’t have to help,” Scott added, laughing. Scott adds that Stirrup shared that if you say you know things, they’ll just ask for help. So just pretend you don’t know. “I was like, whoa, that is next level lazy,” she said.
