Ben Affleck: Batman Now, ‘The Accountant’ Next?
Ben Affleck is in the midst of a very jam-packed year career-wise, but it seems the busy actor-director is already looking ahead to his next big on-screen role. On the heels of a well-reviewed turn in this month’s highly anticipated Gone Girl adaptation, the actor is reportedly in talks to star in the upcoming action-thriller The Accountant.
According to Variety, Affleck has started negotiations with Warner Bros. to take on the lead role in the film, which chronicles the story of a mild-mannered accountant who moonlights as a lethal assassin. The project has long since been in development, with several big names attached in different capacities over the years. Most recently, Sony had its hands on the film, with Will Smith reportedly attached to star. After failing to find the right way to assemble the film, the studio put it into turnaround, where Warner Bros. acquired it. Mel Gibson and the Coen Brothers were also previously tied to the project as directors, but those options also fell through.
Currently, the project only has producers Mark Williams and Lynette Howell attached. Per Variety, Warrior director Gavin O’Connor is now the studio’s top choice to helm the film, but no official offer has been made. Meanwhile, Affleck reportedly caught wind of the film and thought it would be a good project to take on before his next directorial effort, Live By Night, a film adaptation of the Dennis Lehana crime novel, which stars Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning, and Sienna Miller, and begins filming in July for a 2016 release date.
Should Affleck decide to participate in the film, it could be the perfect next role to continue his winning streak of late. Not to mention, it would fit in well with the type of dramatic characters he’s been gravitating toward recently. It seems the actor has found his niche playing men who have secret lives hidden behind their shiny facades.
Case in point? As previously mentioned, Affleck is starring in David Fincher’s mystery Gone Girl as Nick Dunne, the husband in a seemingly perfect couple who is later considered the prime suspect in the disappearance of his wife, Amy. His performance is already getting rave reviews, with several critics calling it some of his finest screen work, and even crediting him for carrying the entire movie.
Also on his list of upcoming projects is the equally highly anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in which he’ll play Bruce Wayne, yet another man with a dark alter ego. Affleck is scheduled to return to the movie’s Detroit location for filming after finishing up his promotional tour for Gone Girl. The superhero flick is scheduled for release on March 25, 2016.
Though nothing is set in stone just yet, it seems The Accountant could provide the actor with the ideal next gritty role to bring to life. With all of the experience Affleck’s garnered lately in exploring these complicated, multilayered characters, the actor seems more than capable of doing the part justice.
