If you’re looking to spend a quiet evening at home with your significant other, you might decide to watch a movie. But which movie is the best one to set the tone for your home date? The Cheat Sheet asked the experts to suggest their best date movie picks. Some of their choices might surprise you.

While this Best Picture-winning Sylvester Stallone hit is mainly thought of as a boxing film, at its heart is the love story between boxer Rocky Balboa and the shy, quiet Adrian. The film is much more about the love that develops between these two characters than about what happens in the boxing ring.

One of the most memorable scenes in the film is when Rocky and Adrian go to an empty ice-skating rink on a date. As Adrian skates with Rocky carefully running beside her, she opens up to him and they talk about the differences in their lives. Both see themselves as “nobodies” (which is a word both characters use in the film to describe themselves) but begin to realize that their relationship gives more meaning to their lives than anything that happens in the ring.

For a more modern take with the same heart and sensibilities, the Rocky spin-off Creed is another excellent choice. Either film choice works as a balance between thrilling physical drama and heartfelt romance—something for everyone!  —Christopher McKittrick, film, theater, pop culture and entertainment writer and Hollywood movie expert for

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Happy couple

The first date I had with my wife was watching The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King at the theater. This was a great movie partly because I’m a Tolkien nerd. It was also a fantastic date movie because it gave me four hours to snuggle up to my beautiful date!  In December we are celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary.

Why choose it as your date movie? Well, I’d recommend watching the other two first, but it’s not totally necessary. My wife hadn’t seen them, and she still enjoyed it. It has a wonderful score, amazing cinematography, action, love interests, friendship, good vs. evil, and it’s just an epic story. It’s four hours! Plenty of time for flirting, cuddling, smooching–or whatever else may happen.  —Eric Sztanyo, Realtor, Keller Williams Advisors Realty

Instant Family

Watch a tear-jerker like Instant Family. It’s a great way to have an experience together, and experiences bring us closer. On top of cuddling through the characters’ turmoil, such movies also provide micro-opportunities for seeing how the other person handles emotion–are they childish, indifferent, or wonderfully human?  —Talya Miron-Shatz, PhD., visiting researcher at Cambridge University, and CEO of Buddy & Soul.
