3 Best Movies in Theaters Right Now: ‘Jackie’ and More

Last week there were some interesting movie releases like Disney’s MoanaThe animated feature has some big stars attached to it including Dwayne Johnson and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film was able to top the Thanksgiving box office by earning about $28 million, and had people talking about Johnson’s surprising singing skills.

Well this week doesn’t have a new feature for kids, but there is one that is Oscar bait, a unpredictable foreign drama, and a horror movie. So which movies should you go see this weekend? Here are the three best movies in theaters this week.

1. Jackie

The film follows Jackie Kennedy grieving privately and trying to stay strong publicly after the assassination of her husband, President John F. Kennedy. Natalie Portman has already won an Oscar for Black Swan, but this film could put her back in the running this year. The movie is getting great reviews and is rated 90% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The actress is being praised by critics for being convincing without coming across as an impersonation, and the movie is repeatedly being described as thrilling.

A big part of Portman’s role is showing the dark and personal impact the tragic event had on the first lady. “The way she handled herself in that sort of crucible was so strong and intelligent,” Portman said according to CNN. “It was really interesting to see that very private side — when you start looking into it — her crisis of faith, her doubts in God, her thoughts of suicide, but also her intense intelligence.”

2. Things to Come

The French film follows a philosophy teacher who is moving forward after the death of her mother, getting fired, and being left by her cheating husband. The movie is rated 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Director and writer, Mia Hansen-Løve is getting a lot of praise from critics for the unpredictable story.

3. Incarnate

We might be in the holiday season, but we still have horror films in our theaters. This movie shows a scientist tapping into the mind of a young boy who is being possessed by a demon. Critics haven’t really been paying attention to this movie so there is no rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But if you’re curious to see how this twist on the usual exorcism story plays out, then you might want to see it.
