3 Best Movies in Theaters Right Now: 'Legend of Tarzan' and More

Summer movie season is officially here, which means audiences can expect a slew of exciting new films to choose from in the coming months. This week is no exception, with several notable movies — from the latest live-action version of The Legend of Tarzan to Steven Spielberg‘s long-awaited Roald Dahl adaptation — set to hit the big screen. Can’t decide what to buy tickets for first? Here are our staff’s picks for the three best movies in theaters now.

1. The Legend of Tarzan

Alexander Skarsgard stars as John Clayton aka Tarzan, who, having acclimated to life in London, is called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment. Margot Robbie plays his wife, Jane Clayton. Rory J. Saper, Christian Stevens, Christoph Waltz, and Samuel L. Jackson also co-star in the movie.

Directed by David Yates, the film hasn’t exactly earned great reviews from critics, scoring a low 30% on Rotten Tomatoes. Though reviewers have panned the movie for its lack of excitement and old-fashioned execution, The Legend of Tarzan boasts both a talented cast and some stunning visuals, which should satisfy those looking for an enjoyable summer adventure flick.

2. The BFG

Based on the Roald Dahl story by the same name, the Spielberg-directed film follows the story of a young girl (Ruby Barnhill), the Queen of England (Penelope Wilton), and a benevolent giant known as The BFG (Mark Rylance), who set out on an adventure to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have been invading the human world.

The movie has earned relatively positive reviews so far, with a 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Though the film has some pacing problems (with some critics calling it “sluggish”), the charismatic lead performances and dazzling visuals are enough to make it worth watching. As the New York Daily News described, The BFG is “fun and likable, occasionally even delightful.”

3. Our Kind of Traitor

The mystery drama follows as a money launderer (Stellan Skarsgård) for Russian gangsters asks a couple vacationing in Marrakesh, Morocco, to deliver incriminating evidence to an MI6 agent (Damian Lewis).

When the couple agrees, the two get caught in a dangerous world of international espionage and dirty politics, embarking on a perilous journey through Paris and Bern, a safe house in the French Alps, and the murky corners of London. Naomie Harris, Ewan McGregor, Mark Gattis, and Alicia von Rittberg also co-star in the movie.

Directed by Susanna White, the movie holds a 72% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Though critics acknowledge that Our Kind of Traitor doesn’t stray too far from the spy genre formula, it’s “solid writing” and “strong acting” is enough to deliver plenty of thrills to audiences.
