Beyonce Was Shut Out at The Emmys: Who Was She Competing Against?

Beyonce’s performance at Coachella was such a sensation that people began calling the event Beychella. The much-anticipated Netflix original that followed the lead-up to the performance, Homecoming, was almost as anticipated. In fact, it became such a phenomenon that the special was nominated for six Emmy Awards. Well, nominations do not equal wins in the world of the Television Academy. Beyonce walked away empty-handed at the Creative Arts Emmys, much to the surprise and chagrin of fans.

What categories was Homecoming nominated in?

Beyonce received three nominations for her role in Homecoming, but the production, as a whole,  received three additional honors. Beyonce received nods for Oustanding Directing for a Variety Special, Oustanding Music Direction and Oustanding Writing for a Variety Special.

Homecoming was also nominated for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special. The special also received nominations for costume design, and it was nominated in the Oustanding Variety Special (pre-recorded) category.

The popularity of the special and the Beyonce’s cult following was expected to buoy the special’s chance of taking home at least one statue, but it wasn’t meant to be. Fans took to Twitter once the winners were announced to question how the pop music icon could have possibly walked away empty-handed.

While Beyonce went home empty-handed, these nominees did win

Beyonce’s shut out at the Creative Arts Emmys might be what everyone is talking about, but there were plenty of winners during the two-night event. After all, someone had to beat out Bey for the trophy. Carpool Karaoke: When Corden Met McCartney won the Oustanding Variety Special category.

Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special went to Springsteen on Broadway, while RuPaul’s Drag Race took home the prize for costume design. The Oustanding Production Design win went to Rent, while Hannah Gadsby: Nanette won the Oustanding Writing category.

How many times has Beyonce been nominated for an Emmy?

The 2019 Emmy Awards brought Beyonce more nominations than ever before, but it was not the first time the “Crazy In Love” singer made it to the awards as a nominee. In 2013, Beyonce was nominated in the Oustanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program. The nomination was associated with Beyonce’s Super Bowl Halftime Show.

She grabbed another nomination in 2015 for her work on On The Run Tour: Beyonce and Jay-Z. The following year she garnered a nomination for her work on the much-acclaimed Lemonade. While Beyonce has managed several nominations she’s yet to bring home an Emmy Award. She is, however, the proud owner of 23 Grammys, and there are rumors of an upcoming Oscars nomination for her role in The Lion King. The nominees for the 2020 Oscars will be announced on January 22, according to The Independent.

Beyonce has proven. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, that her career has plenty of staying power. As she continues to branch out further into the creative arts, more nominations are likely forthcoming. Beyonce fans might see her bring home an Emmy Award yet; it just was not meant to be this year.
