‘BH90210’s’ Jennie Garth Tells How She Saved Her Marriage to Third Husband
Jennie Garth of Fox Network’s BH90210 has dealt with a lot of drama onscreen in her new reboot of Beverly Hills 90210, and in her personal life offscreen as well. The actress recently discussed her reconciliation with husband Dave Abrams after 10 months of separation.
Garth has walked down the aisle before her nuptials with Abrams. In 1994, she wed musician Daniel B. Clark, according to Heavy. The two divorced in 1996 and had no children together. The BH90210 actress went on to meet actor Peter Facinelli on the set of the television film An Unfinished Affair and they married in January 2001. The couple had three daughters together – Luca Bella, Lola Ray, and Fiona Eve.
Facinelli’s career started to take off when he took on the role of Carlisle Cullen in the Twilight franchise. According to Garth’s 2014 memoir “Deep Thoughts From a Hollywood Blonde,” she sensed trouble in the marriage when Facinelli’s star began rising. She wrote about the time when Facinelli returned home from a film and told her he wanted to end their marriage.
“The ground that had been cracking and shifting finally split open and pretty much swallowed me whole: Peter came home, and told me that he didn’t think he wanted to be married to me any longer, and he thought it best that we separate so that we could get a better sense of where we stood with each other,” she wrote. “I was devastated by the news that he was no longer in love with me.”
Facinelli spoke about their split in 2017. “Once a breakup happens you need to go through the healing process first. Love is blind and hindsight is 20/20… People come into your life for a reason and relationships can change and just because we aren’t living together, doesn’t mean you can’t love each other,” he said, according to People. “I think once, there was a time where we had to learn that we had to be able to move forward with love and respect.”
The two worked to maintain an amicable relationship for sake of their daughters. “If they have games and events, we are both there. We talk all the time about co-parenting and the kids,” Facinelli said.
Garth met Abrams, also an actor, on a blind date in late 2014, as reported by People. After just a few months, the couple got engaged in March 2015 and tied the knot that July. Looking back, Garth sees the whirlwind nuptials as part of what ended up causing problems. “We rushed it too much, and we had individual things we needed to work out,” Garth said. “Maybe it was a mistake [to move so fast] and we’ve all had to learn and grow from that. When everything wasn’t shiny and pretty and fun like it had been initially, when things got challenging, [Dave] didn’t know how to handle it as much.”
When Garth started working on the reboot of her iconic 90s show with close friend and co-star Tori Spelling, she saw an opportunity to use some of her experiences as material for the show. “I found out that he filed for divorce from TMZ. That was a big deal for me,” Garth said of Abrams. “So we used it in the show, because why not use the things that hurt us most and then take the power out of them and make them funny.”
The road to reconciliation
After separating from Abrams, Garth realized she did not want to go through another divorce. “The [possibility of a third divorce] really devastated me. I was in a really bad mindset for a good five or six months. It was just embarrassing,” the actress said. “And it made the accepting of it so much harder. But when I finally did accept, like, we’re breaking up, I had to tell myself, Dave is not an option. Because I kept wanting it. And then, just when I felt whole again, we started hanging out.”
Garth sees how the time she and Abrams spent apart helped them both grow where they needed to, saying, “we both had separate learning to do, and then coming back and sharing that growth was kind of the fiber that connected us back together like, ‘I see you differently now.’”
Since reconciling, the couple continues to work on their marriage. “It’s very easy to go back to those old ways,” Garth said. “So it’s a process and it’s continuously wanting to better the relationship.”
