‘Big Bang Theory’ to See Major Shakeup in Season 8 Finale

The Big Bang Theory’s eighth season is heading its final episodes, and it looks like viewers are in for a big cliffhanger. Showrunner Steven Molaro dropped some hints about the upcoming finale to The Hollywood Reporter, teasing that fans will get to see two of the show’s core couples make some major “life-changing decisions.”
As fans of the series know, several of the characters have reached major milestones over the course of the season so far. After years of failed attempts at being an actress, Penny (Kaley Cuoco) finally found a job she excels at in the world of pharmaceutical sales. Meanwhile, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) “spent the night together” for the first time and said their first “I love you’s.” With the season finale set to air next month, these factors will continue to come into play in a big way.
As Molaro confirmed to THR, the finale episode will take place on the fifth anniversary of Sheldon and Amy’s first meeting — the awkward “date” set up by Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and Howard (Simon Helberg). While their relationship has been slowly progressing, things still aren’t moving fast enough for Amy, and she’s letting him know it. “Sheldon is getting a face full of Amy,” Molaro told THR, adding: “She really starts pushing back and [Sheldon’s] got relationships on his mind because of that.”
Her persistence spurs Sheldon to start pointing questions at Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny’s relationship. He wonders why he’s getting critiqued for moving too slowly, when Leonard and Penny — two people who are supposed to serve as a good example of a couple moving forward — have been engaged for more than a year and still haven’t even picked a date for their nuptials. Without necessarily meaning to, his inquiries cause Leonard and Penny to start asking themselves similar questions about their relationship and whether there’s a reason for their lack of wedding progress.
All of that questioning apparently spurs all four characters to eventually make some pretty significant choices. As Molaro described of the finale to The Hollywood Reporter, “Both of those couples — Sheldon and Amy and Leonard and Penny — make some huge, life-changing decisions.”
Whether those changes come in the form of a wedding date or an elopement for Penny and Leonard, a new milestone or a (gasp!) breakup for Sheldon and Amy, or something else entirely, Molaro wouldn’t specify, but he promises “actual big moves are occurring.”
While those two couples may be undergoing the biggest changes, the other characters are also dealing with their own issues. For the first time, Raj has a decision to make about his love life. With Emily (Laura Spencer) back in the finale, Raj has to confront the fact that they may not be the best match together, despite that she clearly enjoys spending time with him. As someone who has never broken up with someone before, though, it’s not an easy decision for him to make.
Meanwhile, Howard and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) will continue to adjust to life without Mrs. Wolowitz’s house — and living in her old house with their new roommate, Stuart (Kevin Sussman).
While we may not know exactly what the cliffhanger will be, it’s clear viewers should expect this season to go out strong and with a few surprises. At least fans don’t have to worry about renewal, as The Big Bang Theory has already been green-lit through Season 10 (with Season 9 scheduled for later this year).
The Big Bang Theory’s Season 8 finale airs May 7 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
