‘Big Brother’: This Contestant is Still Making Racist Comments and Fans Aren’t Having It
There are a few things that can be expected with every season of Big Brother. Each season, you can bet money that alliances will form, they will eventually crumble, someone will be backdoored, and some people will form showmances. And of course, this season has had all of those things.
But all of the usual game play has taken a backseat this year to the strange racist undertones that one cast member’s comments have taken.
Why do people think that Jackson Matthews is racist?
When Jackson Matthews was first introduced as a Big Brother houseguest, viewers were both excited and stunned by his Jason Momoa good looks. But it didn’t take long for fan perception of him to change.
From very early on, he made it clear that he had some kind of personal vendetta against Kemi Fakunle, the only African American woman on the show.
His comments eventually got so bad that people started a petition to get him kicked off of the show.
“Jack Matthews has said numerous racist things and has been very aggressive towards the only black woman in the ‘Big Brother’ house, including saying he wants to ‘stomp a mud hole through her chest.’ He needs to be expelled for Kemi’s safety and to show that it’s not okay to be racist in 2019, especially on tv,” the description of the petition read.
While he wasn’t kicked off of the show, production did eventually speak to Matthews about his comments.
Is Matthews still being racist?
You may have thought that now that Fakunle is off of the show, Matthews’ racist comments would stop. You would have thought wrong.
After the Gr8ful alliance tricked Bella Wang and Nick Maccarone by voting off Cliff Hogg, Wang felt like she couldn’t trust the alliance anymore.
“The proof is in the pudding,” she said.
Later, when the comment was brought up again, Matthews added, “the rice pudding,” alluding to the fact that Bella is Asian.
Since the petition was created, fans have continued to call out CBS and Big Brother for allowing Matthews to stay on the show.
“It’s not his 1st comment or the 1st time he’s been talked to by production yet this behavior continues,” one fan tweeted. “Truly disgusting. Make change, not excuses.”
For some fans, the cumulation of comments has just gotten to be too much.
“He didn’t make just one ‘off colored’ joke, it was a plethora of racist and rude things!” another person wrote. “Before the rice comment, he said he wanted to stomp a mud hole into the chest of the only black female houseguest. As well as relentlessly go after her all season for no reason at all!”
Some people even accused Big Brother of trying to hide the blatant racism on the show by switching the cameras when anything happened.
“OOOOOH! Christie and Tommy are talking about Jack’s racist ‘Rice Pudding’ comment towards Bella and how they just suddenly realized what he meant and—FEEDS CHANGE. WE SEE YOU HIDING RACISIM BIG BROTHER!!!! another person said.
Production hasn’t traditionally removed people from the house based on public outcry, but this season may prove that there is a first time for everything.
