Big Little Lies is filled with drama, intrigue, love, sex, murder–anything you could ever want out of an HBO drama. The first season was incredibly popular, scoring a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 94% for the audience score. Whether you fancy yourself a high-brow critic or someone who lives for fictional trashy drama, BLL really has something for everyone.

Why then might it not survive its second season? Though audiences have fallen in love with the show’s characters and are hooked on the plot, that doesn’t necessarily guarantee a long life for any show.

‘Big Little Lies’ writer, David Kelley, says there aren’t any plans for a season 3

Unfortunately, Kelley just announced at the Television Critics Association tour that there are currently no plans to continue with a season 3.

“We like our closure at season 2, that will probably be it,” said Kelley.

Upon the announcement, the show’s stars, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, pointed out that Kelley had said something similar at the end of season 1.

“That’s what you said last time!” said Kidman.

“Yeah, you sat there and said the same thing!” added Witherspoon.

But Kidman quickly changed her tune to confirm Kelley and said a season 3 was not currently being discussed.

“There’s no plan for it. This was a long shoot for us, an enormous amount of work, we’re amazed we can be here,” Kidman clarified.

But Kidman and Witherspoon had a point: season 2 of Big Little Lies was never supposed to happen, either. Season 1 ended where the book the series is based on ends.

Why season 2 of ‘Big Little Lies’ was able to take place

Kidman says season 2 happened, in part, because there was such a huge demand from the show’s audience.

“We all said goodbye, but we became very close, had such a good time doing it and the desire to spend more time together was a huge part of it, but there was an enormous demand from the audience,” said Kidman. “I’ve never been in something that reached so far globally, that was such a compelling idea in terms of putting it together again… but it was generated by the audience.”

Seeing the huge audience response, and then learning Meryl Streep wanted to be a part of the second season sealed the deal for the cast and crew.

When will season 2 of ‘Big Little Lies’ air on HBO?

We don’t have to wait for much longer. Season 2 of Big Little Lies will return to HBO in June 2019. And this season’s going to be a little different.

“I will say not to compare it to the first one… it is its own entity and hopefully, it will be taken in that way,” said Kidman. “It was definitely made with an enormous amount of love.”

Because the audience demand was so great, and everyone enjoyed the first season so much, the show’s producers, writers, and cast all felt they needed to raise the bar for season 2. So you know we’ll be getting a quality product.

“We didn’t want to do this unless we could have a fair shot of living up to the bar we set in year one,” said Kelley. “We were unflinching with each other about stories we thought viable and ones not good enough. We didn’t agree to set sail until we had the commitment from all of us.”
