‘Big Little Lies:’ Did Reese Witherspoon Just Hint at a Third Season on Twitter?
As far as fans could tell, tonight’s episode was destined to be the last installment in the dramatic splendor that is Big Little Lies. Binding five disparate women together – on the basis of a shared, dark secret – the show explores motherhood, friendship, marriage, abuse, and more, all while remaining sincere, suspenseful, and sometimes, “bitingly funny.” Big Little Lies is like a soap opera if it were critically acclaimed and boasted enlightening narratives and significant character arcs.
The first season of Big Little Lies (BLL) was based on Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name; David E. Kelley penned the screenplay, and the show was never meant to see a second season. However, following positive audience and critical reception, Moriarty agreed to write a follow-up novella, which has served as the basis of season two.
Moriarty has yet to write additional Big Little Lies content, and HBO Executive Casey Bloys has deemed a third season “unrealistic.” Thus, fans are coming to accept that – though kicking and screaming each step of the way – Big Little Lies may be reaching its end. However, a recent Tweet by Reese Witherspoon has BLL enthusiasts raising an eyebrow.
Reese Witherspoon talks SEASON finale of ‘Big Little Lies’
Reese Witherspoon recently posted on Twitter, thanking fans who have followed the show. However, her word choice has many wondering if the series has not been utterly axed. Witherspoon tweeted:
“Can’t believe tonight is the season finale of @biglittlelies! To all the fans of the show, THANK YOU ! You are the reason this show is everything it can be. Thank you for watching, for discussing, for tweeting…. for Loving these women. It means the world to me! ”Reese Witherspoon
Following’s Reese Witherspoon post, fans have taken to the comments section to raise hopes once more. Drawing others’ attention to Witherspoon’s word choice, fans note that she said “season finale,” as opposed to “series finale.” Do we think Reese Witherspoon is trying to send a covert message, or did she merely choose the word season instead?
Given that this show’s brief run has been one of its identifying attributes, some fans find it a bit odd that Witherspoon has chosen to avoid stressing the finality of this moment to its full, heartwrenching extent. The question is: could a third season even work?
What would it take to see a third season of ‘Big Little Lies?’
The Big Little Lies cast includes some of the most famous actresses currently working in Hollywood; meaning, they are in high demand. For a third season of Big Little Lies to occur, some serious scheduling skills would need to come to the table.
Nicole Kidman is set to star in another HBO show, The Undoing, which is already filming. Meryl Streep will lead Ryan Murphy’s The Prom for Netflix. Reese Witherspoon is set to star in the TV series Little Fires Everywhere. And the list goes on. Making Big Little Work, with such an in-demand cast may be possible, but it won’t be easy.
In addition to finding a way to schedule filming, Moriarty would have to pen additional content for each of the main characters. And, she is pretty busy working on other book-to-screen projects.
