‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 Episode 6: The Monterey Five Pact Starts Getting To Everyone
In Big Little Lies Season 2, Renata Klein (Laura Dern) filed for bankruptcy after her husband lost their money in a bad investment. Also, Ed and Madeline Mackenzie (Adam Scott and Reese Witherspoon) make progress in their relationship as Madeline finally starts being honest with her husband. However, he has the opportunity to “revenge cheat” on Madeline with Tori Bachman (Sarah Sokolovic), the theater director’s wife.
Additionally, Mary Louise Wright (Meryl Streep) filed for guardianship of her grandchildren, and plans to aggressively take down her daughter-in-law, Celeste Wright, (Nicole Kidman), all “in the interests of the kids.” Finally, Bonnie Carlson (Zoe Kravitz) and Corey Brockfield (Douglas Smith) both ended up at the police station at the end of the previous episode.
Because Perry Wright’s (Alexander Skarsgard) death will get brought up in trial, the lie surrounding how he died gets harder for the ladies to keep. How does their pact start getting to the women? Keep reading to find out!
Renata has not shown much concern over the lie, especially as she is going through a bankruptcy case caused by her husband, Gordon (Jeffrey Nordling). In Big Little Lies Season 2 Episode 6, Renata must fire her nanny because the couple is unable to continue paying her.
She showed up at their bankruptcy hearing and demanded severance with an additional $150,000 for “other services rendered.” The nanny said the services related to “stress management,” and Renata knew exactly what she meant. On the drive home, Gordon tried to explain another one of his mistakes to his wife. However, using other choice words, Renata epically told him to shut up for the rest of his life.
Jane Chapman in ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 Episode 6
Big Little Lies Season 2 Episode 6 began with Jane (Shailene Woodley) accusing her boyfriend, Corey, of being a cop. The surfer admitted that Detective Adrienne Quinlan (Merrin Dungey) called him in for questioning and asked about their relationship. He also said she asked about Perry’s death, and told him “the first person who cracks gets a break.” Jane left his house and ignored his phone calls and texts.
Corey confronted her at work, and she replied she “can’t do this right now” and continued working. Again, while Jane and her son, Ziggy (Iaian Armitage) surfed at the beach, Corey approached her and said he still wanted the relationship. However, it seems he knows something as he already asked if she was in “The Monterey Five” earlier in the season. Now, the Detective has confirmed his suspicions.
Celeste and Mary Louise Wright
The two ladies appeared in custody court to fight for guardianship of Celeste’s twin boys, Max and Josh (Nicholas and Cameron Crovetti) in Big Little Lies Season 2 Episode 6. Mary Louise’s lawyer, Ira Farber (Denis O’Hare) bombarded Celeste with several slut-shaming questions, painting her to be a violent woman herself with a string of one-night stands following her husband’s death.
Ira also showed a video re-enactment of Perry’s fall, claiming the way he landed is consistent with a push, not a trip as the women claimed. The lawyer straight up asked Celeste if she pushed Perry, causing his death, to which Celeste vehemently denied.
However, Detective Quinlan sat in the court and watched the four other ladies’ reactions to the question, especially Bonnie. After Ira’s interrogation, the judge (Becky Ann Baker) asked Celeste about her “sex addiction” and why she stayed with Perry if he abused her. Celeste admitted she struggled in the wake of her husband’s death and stayed with him because she thought he would get better.
The judge seemed to believe her. However, Celeste, a lawyer herself, asked to question Mary Louise at another hearing. Even though her judge said it would be against her best interest, she will allow Celeste to face her accuser.
Madeline Mackenzie in ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 Episode 6
After The Monterey Five met late that night when Celeste texted them, Madeline admitted to Ed that she snapped on Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz). Ed asked why they met up that late, but of course, Madeline had to lie. Her husband sensed the dishonesty and called her out on it. She explained the situation to Renata, who reminded her of the meaning of pact and that she could not tell anyone.
Madeline then apologized to Bonnie at Celeste’s trial for her outburst and admitted she had a lot of things going on in her life. Bonnie realized the lie was getting to Madeline also, even though she’s the main person who suggested they should say Perry fell.
In one of the most significant breakthroughs, the viewers finally understand Bonnie’s complicated relationship with her mother, Elizabeth (Crystal Fox) in Big Little Lies Season 2 Episode 6. When her husband, Nathan (James Tupper), called Elizabeth into town after Bonnie began acting strange, she has had violent flashbacks of her mother slapping her, grabbing her, and attempting to drown her.
On Season 2 Episode 5, her father claimed he tried to “stop the rage” and protect Bonnie the best way he could. However, Bonnie wrote down everything she resented her mother for and how their relationship caused her to act out sexually as a teenager and kill Perry Wright.
