A state trooper kills a private detective after 2 girls go missing

The story centers around two missing sisters – Danielle (Natalie Alyn Lind) and Grace (Jade Pettyjohn) – who have been kidnapped by a long-haul trucker named Ronald Pergman (Brian Geraghty) on a rural road in Montana. Danielle’s boyfriend, Justin (Gage Marsh), gets his parents involved – Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick) and Cody Hoyt (Ryan Phillippe), an ex-cop and a private investigator. Together with Cody’s private investigator partner, Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury), they search for the missing girls.

But Ronald is working with a state trooper named Rick Legarski (John Carroll Lynch) in a sex trafficking ring, and he just so happens to get paired up with Cody in the search for the sisters. But when Cody gets too close, Rick shoots and kills him.

When Cassie heads to visit the bar/store where Cody last visited before vanishing, she meets Rick, and she’s immediately suspicious of him. She thinks he might have something to do with Cody’s disappearance pretty early on. When Cassie questions him, Rick says his “loose cannon radar” was going off, and he admits he didn’t go with Cody to a local church to look at the attendee list for long-haul truckers.

That’s when Cassie really gets suspicious, as Rick is telling a “private citizen” to basically investigate on his own. Plus, he mentions his pension being very important to him, something he wasn’t willing to risk by going off with Cody. He says he last saw Cody leave in the early morning to visit the church, but fans know he actually killed him and had his truck buried.

Rick mentions he’s going to work on getting a warrant to view the local church’s attendee list. His mannerisms and demeanor lead Cassie’s reservations about him to grow, and she visits his ex-wife, who happens to be cousins with the secretary of Cody and Cassie’s private investigator’s office, Denise (Dedee Pfeiffer).

Cassie tells Jenny that she thinks Rick’s involved in the abductions of missing women in the area, and she’s right.

When Rick learns that Cassie was asking about him, he is far from happy. She asked questions like if he was “honest” or “dangerous,” and Rick lets his displeasure be known. The next day, Cassie shows back up at the bar/store where she met Rick the first time, and when he sees her, he says, “You. You, you, you, you, you. Seeing my ex-wife asking questions about me, inquiries of a libelous nature. I’m not a happy camper.”

“Neither am I because some things aren’t adding up,” Cassie says. “Some things about you.”

“I extended myself for your partner Cody,” Rick insists. “And so again for you. And you talked to my ex-wife, making me out to be some kind of deviant. I am a Montana state trooper.”

Cassie says that’s what doesn’t make sense, since he hasn’t even gone “the first mile” to find the missing girls and he let Cody go out alone. “Because what? You’re worried about your pension?” she asks. “That isn’t a Montana state trooper, that’s a load of crap.”

Rick threatens to arrest Cassie

Then, Rick threatens to arrest Cassie in an already heated moment. “I could have a mind to handcuff and arrest you right now,” he spats back in a threat. She asks “on what grounds,” and he says, “On whatever grounds I want.” He continues, saying, “You say you want to help these girls? I am the law in these parts. You really mean to antagonize the law?”

Cassie asks how the warrant is coming, and when he doesn’t respond, she thanks him for his help, and turns to leave. But Rick adds one last thing. “Miss Dewell,” he says. “Seems we got off on the wrong foot. My esteem is a bit tied up in being a trooper.” He says he aims to “protect and serve,” saying he wants to find the girls too, and that she has his “word.”

“OK. As long as I have your word,” Cassie says. Rick mentions he doesn’t like her “tone” or “attitude,” asking if she has “something against police officers.”

“Those with half a mind to arrest me for whatever they want? Yeah, I do,” she says as she gets in the truck and drives off.

What will happen next? Cassie is on the case, and she isn’t going to let up until she finds Cody and the missing girls. Hopefully, she’ll learn the truth soon enough.
