What happened in the premiere?

The new show, created by David E. Kelley, has a few main characters, including two private investigators named Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury) and Cody Hoyt (Ryan Phillippe). The show is based on the novel series by C.J. Box. The main characters have a complicated love triangle going on, considering Cody is still married to his estranged ex-cop wife, Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick), but he’s been messing around with his partner, Cassie. The two women even throw punches over it, so you know this is some serious drama.

However, the main drama really starts when Jenny and Cody’s son, Justin (Gage Marsh), mentions that his girlfriend and her sister, Danielle (Natalie Alyn Lind) and Grace (Jade Pettyjohn) never arrived as expected. It turns out they were taken by a truck driver named Ronald Pergman (Brian Geraghty) on a rural road in Montana, but that hasn’t yet been revealed.

Justin says that the girls were expected a while ago. They aren’t answering messages or calls, and their mother is calling Justin wondering what’s up. His parents get working on finding them, and Cody clues Cassie in on what’s going on as well.

Cody teams up with a state trooper

Denise (Dedee Pfeiffer), the secretary for Cody and Cassie’s mutual private investigator’s office, pairs him up with a state trooper that she’s familiar with that was once married to her cousin, named Rick Legarski (John Carroll Lynch), to assist them in the search for the girls. Cody learns from the state trooper that this isn’t the first time a woman has gone missing in the area.

Cody meets up with Rick to discuss the next moves. During the conversation, Cody’s wife sends him information about 12 women that have gone missing in the area, most of them last scene at truck stops. “There’s a faction of truckers mixed up in sex trafficking,” Cody adds.

They decide to head to a church to look at the attendee list in search of truckers. Rick mentions that they will probably encounter people he knows, and that Cody should “keep his manners in play.”

Rick gets in the truck that Cody is already in, and says, “If I may ask, where’d you hear that about long-haul truckers being tied to slave trade ‘cause I sure as surely never heard that?”

Cody mentions that it isn’t anything “official, just cop to ex-cop grapevine.”

Next, Rick mentions that no one talks to him, as he’s a state trooper. “Oh, one other thing.” Rick says, as he pulls out a handgun and shoots Cody. From the look of things, Cody couldn’t have lived through that shot, and he’s presumed dead. It’s a shocking turn of events, but it’s one that book readers knew was coming. Cody was a main character, and for him to be killed off is hard to comprehend.

Rick, who has blood all over him, pulls out his cell phone to call the truck driver who kidnapped the two girls. “Ronald, you’ve been sloppy,” Rick says. No one else yet knows about Cody’s fate.

Kylie Bunbury gave the twist away ahead of the premiere

Some fans also knew what was coming based on Kylie Bunbury’s comment while promoting the series. The three main actors, Winnick, Bunbury, and Phillippe went on Good Morning America ahead of the premiere, and Bunbury accidentally gave the twist away. They were all asked to describe their reactions to the premiere episode, and this is where Bunbury let the information slip.

“I was shocked as well and really excited that ABC is taking a chance like this,” she explains in the official edited video version from Good Morning America. But according to The Wrap, she actually continued speaking and said: “…to kill off a star like Ryan. And I also had some deep thoughts about what his fans are going to think about it.”

It was a shocking moment even still, and it’s unclear where the show goes from here. We’ll have to see how events play out as the season continues.
