‘Big Sky’ Winter Finale: Is [SPOILER] Really Dead and Will They Appear in Future Episodes?
Big Sky just premiered its winter finale and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Viewers were kept guessing from start to finish, and the ending was shocking to say the least. We have the details for you when it comes to a surprising plot twist involving a certain character.
[Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers from ‘Big Sky’]
Did the private detectives find the missing girls in the winter finale?
The premise of the story surrounds the search for two missing sisters, Danielle (Natalie Alyn Lind) and Grace (Jade Pettyjohn), who were kidnapped by a long-haul trucker named Ronald Pergman (Brian Geraghty). He’s working with a corrupt state trooper named Rick Legarski (John Carroll Lynch) in a sex trafficking ring. The sisters are being held captive with Jerrie (Jesse James Keitel), who was kidnapped from a truck stop right before them.
Danielle’s boyfriend’s parents get on the case looking for the sisters, and Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick) and Cody Hoyt (Ryan Phillippe), an ex-cop and a private detective, work alongside Cody’s partner, Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury). However, in the premiere episode, Rick kills Cody when he gets too close to uncovering the truth.
Since then, Jenny and Cassie think Cody is missing as well, and they’re searching for him too. At the same time, Danielle, Grace, and Jerry try to find a way out, and Grace escapes, only to be shot in the leg twice by an arrow by Rick and taken back to where they are being held captive.
After putting a tracker on Rick’s truck, the detectives make it to the abandoned area of the Bureau of Land Management where those who were abducted are being kept, but they don’t find them since they’re being held underground. They go back with backup once they realize there is a basement area, and they find Rick eating and quite furious at the accusation. Ronald has already moved them to the bar/store where Rick first met Cody, and Jenny and Cassie are left perplexed.
Cassie shoots Rick in the head
However, Cassie later goes to the bar and finds Rick there in the basement area. With her gun drawn and pointed his way, Rick doesn’t seem to think she’s capable of pulling the trigger. She tells him to put his hands where she can see them, but he says she’s “trespassing” and has pulled a weapon on a state trooper.
Cassie tells him if he doesn’t put his hands in the air, she’ll shoot him. When Cassie hears the sisters and Jerrie trying to scream for help, Rick says he “just showed up to rescue” them. Rick tries to get Cassie to come down the stairs toward him, but she isn’t falling for it. Then Rick pulls out his firearm as well.
“I’m going to count to five. If you don’t put your weapon down by the count of five, one of three things will happen,” Rick says. “A, I’ll put my weapon down, B, raise it in the air like Alexander Hamilton, C, shoot you. My money’s on C.”
He starts counting and gets to “four” when Cassie shoots him in the head. “My, my, my,” Rick says and he falls to the ground. It seems like a good possibility that he could be dead based on where Rick gets shot, although we don’t have full confirmation yet. There is also a chance he could still be alive and that doctors are able to save his life.
Is Rick really dead and will he appear in future episodes?
John Carroll Lynch, who plays state trooper Rick, spoke with TV Insider about the winter finale, and he revealed whether we will see his character again. He also gives a subtle answer about whether Rick Legarski is dead or not.
When asked if his character is dead, he says, “[Laughs] Rick is dead. … We’ll find out whether or not Rick is dead,” he continued. “Certainly, in the circumstances, one would think so.”
Obviously getting shot could mean Rick is dead, but fans won’t know for sure until the series returns next year. However, Carroll Lynch did reveal that Rick will be in future episodes, which presumably could be in the form of flashbacks like the series has done with Cody.
“Let’s just say, he appears in other episodes,” the actor said. When flashbacks are mentioned, Carroll Lynch said, “I certainly think [that’s] a possibility. He has relationships with a lot of different people, so each of them might have an experience flashing back, particularly Merilee, obviously.”
Fans will have to wait until Tuesday, January 26 at 10 p.m. EST. to see new episodes and learn how that shocking ending fully plays out.
