‘Billy On the Street’ And Chris Evans Pay Homage To This Captain America Meme

The world of entertainment can be very cyclical. A moment happens in, say a Marvel Cinematic Universe flick, is then edited on social media, and then comes back around on a TV series. Here’s how Billy on the Street acknowledged a popular Marvel meme with guest star Chris Evans.

We all know who this man is, but we’ll just sum it up for you quickly. Evans is a beloved actor who got his start in films like Not Another Teen Movie and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. He became a pretty big star with the Fantastic Four movies, but that wasn’t even his biggest superhero role.

Years later, Evans was cast as Steve Rogers in the MCU. He stars in Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War, as well as ensemble entries The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and, finally, Avengers: Endgame. His arc has, sadly, come to a close.

Meanwhile, actor and comedian Billy Eichner has had a very different career trajectory. He first gained attention for his Funny Or Die series Billy on the Street in 2011. First airing on Fuse, the game show sees Eichner running around the streets on New York City asking pop culture questions to strangers, often accompanied by a celebrity guest.

After three seasons, the show made a transition to TruTV. It lasted two seasons there before going off the air. However, it 2018, Eichner announced that Billy on the Street was coming back in short form on YouTube and other streaming platforms with a new sponsor, Lyft.

This mash-up became legendary

During the hiatus between the old series and the new, Twitter user Lissy (handle @homeisarealsong) took the audio of Eichner from a segment he does, called “Lesbian Lightning Round” and a moment from Civil War in which Cap is rounding up his team, and combined the two. It became a massive meme.

Eichner shared it on his own Twitter account, tagging Evans. Evans replied, “That’s exactly what I was going for in that moment. I’m glad someone picked up on my inner monologue.” It was a perfect case of the internet coming together over something pointless yet brilliant.

A new episode pays homage to the meme

Given Eichner’s propensity for commenting on internet culture and Evans’ willingness to go along with whatever makes people laugh, they were bound to comment on this moment if they ever got together. So, naturally, that’s what happened.

While promoting his new film Knives Out, Evans came on Billy on the Street. He was then part of a very brief “Lesbian Lightning Round,” during which Eichner, of course, uttered the now-infamous line, “Let’s go, lesbians, let’s go!” Evans can be seen laughing along.

What is Evans’ new movie about?

Evans was on Billy on the Street, as mentioned, to promote his new film, his first in a post-Marvel era for the actor. He stars in Knives Out, a murder-mystery with an all-star cast. Evans portrays Ransom, the grandson of the deceased.

Alongside Evans are Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, and many more. The film arrives in theaters in the U.S. on Nov. 27, 2019.
