‘BIP’: Kristina Schulman Is Getting a Ton of Attention For Covering Her Head in Turkey
The latest season of Bachelor in Paradise may be over, but we’re not ready to stop talking about the contestants just yet. As we know, there were multiple couples who seemed solid on the show but have since gone their separate ways. And there are a few couples, like Hannah Godwin and Dylan Barbour, for example, who beat the odds and are still happily in love. As for Kristina Schulman, the last season of Paradise marked her second time on the show. And while she didn’t find love, she certainly found herself more Instagram followers and media attention.
It looks like Schulman took a trip to Turkey recently, as she’s posting photos of her latest adventures to Instagram. One post of hers got major attention, however, as it shows her covering her head out of respect for the culture. Here’s what her followers are saying.
Kristina Schulman got a lot of bad press after her most recent stint in ‘Paradise’
When Schulman went on Nick Viall’s season of The Bachelor, she quickly became a fan favorite. Her back story of coming to the U.S. after living in an orphanage in Russia spoke to loyal Bachelor followers, as she had a story everyone was rooting for. Unfortunately, she couldn’t win Viall’s heart in the end. And while she’s dated other Bachelor nation celebrities, like Dean Unglert, she appears to be flying solo now.
Schulman showed her harder, more stern side on the latest season of Paradise, and many thought she came off as rude and inconsiderate, too. She’s even remarked on the hate she’s received, especially when it came to her relationship with Blake Horstmann.
“After last night’s episode of ‘Bachelor in Paradise,’ I was in shock about how much hate mail I got. But that’s not what struck me the most—what did is how many Blake haters are out there (who don’t even know him personally!),” Schulman wrote on her Instagram Story. “If you can’t handle it, turn off your TV or watch FRIENDS on Netflix. Thank you to those who CHOOSE to spread love and not hate.”
She took a trip to Turkey and covered her head in a photo
Despite the negativity, Schulman continues to post about her life online. And according to her Instagram, she recently took a trip to Istanbul, Turkey. She added photos of herself eating plenty of delicious Turkish food and traveling on a boat. And she also posted a photo of herself with her head covered, as she was visiting the famous Blue Mosque.
“Is covering your head an obligation?” one of Schulman’s followers asked. To that, Schulman answered, “out of respect, yes.” But not everyone seemed to agree with her here. Another wrote, “strange, I was there not long ago, didn’t have my head covered and didn’t see many people with their heads covered either.” And another added, “shame on you for not being educated enough to properly understand that no you are not obligated to cover your head.”
Should Schulman have kept her head covered?
So, should Schulman have felt obligated to keep her head covered since she visited a mosque in Istanbul? According to G Adventures, it seems it’s appropriate for visitors to dress more formally — and the publication notes it’s a requirement to cover the hair, shoulders, and knees when entering a mosque. But generally speaking, it seems there’s some controversy when it comes to whether or not to wear a headscarf.
According to Public International Radio, “Turkey’s secular government outlawed the headscarf for civil servants and public universities in 1980, citing the need for the separation of state and religion.” But the ban was lifted in 2011. Now, it seems women who choose to wear a headscarf regularly are ridiculed and isolated by liberals, and those who don’t are ostracized by conservatives.
It appears Schulman may err on the side of caution when it comes to being respectful in a foreign country, which is why she’s covering her head. And it’s admirable that she’s trying to show consideration for a culture that’s not her own. We’re hoping to hear more about Schulman’s adventures soon!
