For the last seven years, Black-ish has entertained fans with its humor and heart. The show, which features a star-studded cast, has received Emmy nominations and has even inspired three spinoff shows: Grown-ish, Mixed-ish, and Old-ish. But Kenya Barris, creator of the show, has announced that Black-ish has been renewed for Season 8, which will also serve as the show’s final season.

‘Black-ish’ creator, Kenya Barris, announces the show will end with Season 8

“#BLACKISH ANNOUNCEMENT!!!” Barris wrote in an Instagram caption. “To ALL the people in the world I love, honor, respect and care for it is both exciting and bittersweet to share that Black-ish has been RENEWED by ABC for it’s [sic] EIGHTH… and FINAL SEASON. In this day and age, it is rare to get to decide when your show should come to an end, and we are grateful along with ABC to be able to make this final season exactly what we’d hoped for – and to do it with the entire and AMAZINGLY STELLAR cast coming back to close this chapter out with us the right way!”

Continuing on, Barris shared that creating Black-ish has altered the course of his life. “This show has changed my life in so many ways and I am so proud of the conversations we’ve started along the way,” he declared. “None of this would have been possible without our audience and supporters, who have championed the show every step of the journey; allowing us to change not just the narrative of Black Families, but of Family, Culture, and the World in general. All the while allowing us to talk about things that people were not supposed to talk about period… especially on a network television comedy.”

Finally, the Black-ish creator gave thanks to everyone who helped make the show a success. “Thank you to everyone who made it possible to get to this point!” he shared. “The cast, crew, writers, directors, executives, and especially my family, who allowed me to mine so many deeply personal moments from them (many times forgetting to give them the heads up) and show them to the world. Tears fill my eyes and a smile brightens my face as I say thank you to ALL of my blackish family for all you have given of yourselves.”

The renewal of ‘Black-ish’ allows Barris to end the show on his terms

Naturally, fans of Black-ish had mixed feelings about learning that the show would be ending with Season 8. Some were looking forward to seeing how the show would wrap up, while others felt sad to see their favorite show come to an end. But, despite the mixed feelings, most fans were deeply appreciative of the feel-good vibes and levity that the sitcom provided them with throughout the years. It’ll be interesting to see how the Johnson family chooses to take their final bow.
