‘Black Mirror’ Season 5: Why Miley Cyrus Was a Perfect Choice for the Show

Black Mirror is the show everyone’s been talking about since it first came to Netflix in 2016. It tackles the difficult topic of how technology can impact our lives if we’re not careful. The show has had four successful seasons.

Netflix just released its official trailer for Black Mirror season five and the rumors are true: Miley Cyrus will be in the iconic show. In addition to Cyrus, the anthology sci-fi series will feature other household names: Anthony Mackie, Topher Grace, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Here’s what we know so far.

The newest trailer tells us the highly-anticipated show will return for season five on June 5th, 2019. There will be three stories, less than previous seasons, and features a large list of familiar faces, including Cyrus, Grace, Andrew Scott, Pom Klementieff and Abdul-Mateen.

Rumors have been swirling around Cyrus being a possible addition to the Black Mirror cast ever since she appeared on the Howard Stern Show in December. She wasn’t allowed, at the time, to officially say whether she was a part of the show, but when Stern asked her if she was a part of the show, although she stayed silent on air, Stern reported that she had indeed shaken her head, indicating “yes” to his question.

She couldn’t say much about her role, but she did tell Stern, “I hate everything, but it was the first time I’ve left somewhere feeling really proud of my work.” She also promised that she plays a dynamic role that has a “lot of different sides” to the character.

Cyrus said: “There’s a lot of dimension to it, and actually it was while the devastation of Malibu was happening, and it was a really weird learning experience for me because I was so far from home and the show is already really dark, and it’s already kind of eerie when you’re there the whole time. But I learned a lot about myself, and I think I was able to use that and put that into it.”

Why Miley Cyrus is perfect for ‘Black Mirror’

As the Washington Examiner points out, Cyrus may be the perfect person for Black Mirror. In season one, episode two, titled, Fifteen Million Merits, a woman on a singing competition must perform degrading acts so that the producers can profit from her.

Cyrus certainly knows all about the degrading entertainment industry. Even though she has said she was, “expressing herself,” no one can doubt that the environment Cyrus grew up in fostered this kind of “give up everything for money,” kind of attitude. Cyrus seems to be doing much better now, but there was a time we were all genuinely worried about Cyrus and concerned she may be headed for a breakdown.

The small clip of Cyrus in the Black Mirror trailer reveals her standing before a crowd and wearing a purple wig. It appears the pop star may be playing a role that hits pretty close to home. Another scene (without Cyrus) features an Alexa-like doll, with a similar purple hairstyle. It’s unclear whether these things are connected, or if it’s even the same episode. We’ll have to wait until June to find out for sure, but it sure looks like a role Cyrus will be perfect for.

What’s next for Miley Cyrus?

Currently, Cyrus is getting used to the married life, after a quiet wedding to her longtime sweetheart, Liam Hemsworth, in December. She released a new song with Mark Ronson, titled Nothing Breaks Like a Heart, which peaked at number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number two on the UK Singles Chart.

Cyrus has also been teasing a new release, by posting the words, “She is Coming,” all over her social media accounts. It’s not exactly clear what is coming, whether it’s a new album or just a new single. It’s also not clear if She is Coming is the album/song title or if it just means something is coming. But one thing that is clear — her accounts (Twitter and Instagram) say, “She is Coming 5/30” — so we don’t have long to wait.

Things are probably going to get crazy for Cyrus, once Black Mirror season five is released. We can guarantee, with a show as popular a Black Mirror, there will be plenty of attention and interviews after her performance drops. Who knows what kind of doors that could open up for the already well-known Cyrus? I guess we’ll just have to wait until June to find out.
