‘Black Panther 2’: Marvel Fans Will Riot If This Character Doesn’t Get More Screen Time

Marvel fans would like to see many things happen with Black Panther 2, and that’s no surprise, given that Wakanda has so many characters and plot elements, and given that the movie is Marvel’s most popular film that doesn’t have Avengers in the title.

Specifically, what fans would like to see is an enlarged role for Okoye, played by Danai Gurira, the warrior who took T’Challa’s place during the blip, also known as the Thanos snap. Fans have argued she could even get her own film, and there is at least one other Black Panther character worthy of her own movie.

What do fans want with Okoye?

Screen Rant compiled a list of ideas they’d like to see come to fruition in Black Panther, and one of those is Okoye getting more to do. Her entry reads, “She was one of the breakout stars of Black Panther, and her expanded presence in the past two Avengers movies – particularly in Endgame, since she was the only major Wakandan character left alive – has made her a fan favorite.”

As Spider-Man: Far from Home did, Black Panther 2 could deal with the after-effects of the snap, and we could see how Wakanda was impacted by its king being gone for five years, and how that might affect the relationships he has with those closest to him.

There has even been speculation that Storm of the X-Men, who had a romance with T’Challa in the comics, could make her MCU entrance here, but that seems unlikely since Kevin Feige  said earlier this it would be quite some time before the X-Men showed up in the MCU.

Okoye is very much like the Wakandan equivalent of Black Widow as the fierce female fighter unexpectedly thrust into leadership. Fans have suggested she could get her own movie, and that doesn’t sound unrealistic, given Marvel’s push for more female representation.

Both of its movies next year, Black Widow and The Eternals, have females front and center in front of and behind the camera, with Black Widow being directed by Cate Shortland and Eternals by Chloe Zhao.

How about a movie for Shuri?

Okoye is far from the only prominent female supporting character in Black Panther. Arguably in second place after Okoye is Shuri, T’Challa’s sister and the tech wizard who designs all the gadgets. If you put it in James Bond terms, Okoye is like Felix Leiter, 007’s right-hand man in the CIA, and Shuri is like Q, who comes up with all of Bond’s tech.

Some might argue that Shuri would be out of her depth in the field, but the first Black Panther made it clear that having designed the tech, she knows very well how to deploy it, And even if Shuri is inexperienced outside of Wakanda, that could become a plot point.

But the possibilities with Shuri go beyond her having a bigger role or her own movie. Letitia Wright, who plays her, has said she would like to see Shuri become Black Panther.

“If the opportunity came about, then why not? It would be comic book accurate. Yeah, that would be amazing. It means more training, more learning and it would really be an amazing adventure. Shuri becomes a savage in the comic books. From going to comedic and fun and like a kid – to then just pulling out some claws. I’m excited,” she said.

Okoye could introduce a major subplot or villain

Whatever happens with Shuri or Okoye herself, Okoye could be the key to a major plot development. In Endgame, she references an underwater earthquake off the coast of Wakanda, Fans think this could be a reference to Atlantis, the legendary undersea kingdom with whom Wakanda could go to war.

Atlantis has been referenced on a SHIELD map in Iron Man 2, and fans picked that up, because Atlantis figures in the comics via the character called the Sub Mariner. That could be tricky because there are rights issues similar to the ones with the Hulk that could prove to be an obstacle. Regardless, Black Panther 2 could go in multiple directions, and most of them sound tantalizing.
